People typically mount their gauges like that so a quick glance will let them know that everything is OK. They orient the gauges so that a normal value will show as a vertical needle. Then as long as the needles are all vertical there is nothing to worry about. It comes from race car stuff where you cant spend alot of time analyzing a gauge.
 
Actually the reason is much more trivial.
It's a mechanical gauge and the way it's built the SS line can't pass through the pod if the gauge is the proper way.

N2o is nitrous oxide, no2 is a hemodiolator that athletes/body buildiers take to increase the inside diameter of blood vessles(sp) that way they can transport oxygen and nutrients better.
