Hey it came back to life! SAFC is a tuning device, I couldn't tell if you were kidding. Thanks for the props BrokenTurd!

There is a big difference between SAFC and DSMLink, though. To put it simply, the SAFC is a piggyback device, while the DSMLink works like an OEM device - as if it came with your car!

For a long time I had all the necessary supporting mods to make over 300hp, but never realized the power until 4 years ago when I added DSMLink. It was night and day.

The only power mod I have done since then, is an upgrade from Supra SMIC to a 24x12x3 FMIC and an upgrade from 2.5” to 3" catback. The car feels much more powerful Now.

How about brakes?

No one said anything about stopping 300hp :)
Brakes and suspension are always a good upgrade and help your car be a little safer... Personally, I hate working on suspension, brakes aren't bad but ugh, suspension is horrible.

I believe I read that SAFC's always have to be tuned, if it a cold morning and you have the SAFC tuned for warmer weather the car will run like crap is what I think I read.
And I've come a long way since I first started, I think I'm finally above newbe level after 2 years. If it wasent for this forum and vfaqs I wouldnt know crap about my car right now so thanks. And I agree you have to build your car in steps unless you are made of money, I can't wait till I hit 300/400whp. And I'm pretty sure the only way to go is DSMlink, if you can afford it.

By the way, excellent thread. I have it saved to my favorites.

The other good thing about this thread is, it gives a sort of a “current trends” in DSM upgrades. For example, 6 years ago, the evo3 turbo was not popular, but now it is consider the best turbo for 350HP range. Also, 5 years ago, a used Supra SMIC (average $150) was the best and cheapest path to a better cooling, but now with the FMIC being so cheap (around $250 with piping), the Supra should be discouraged.

Also, back in the days Magnecor ignition wires (about $90) were the way to go. But now there is the NGK at half the price of the Magnecors, and almost as good for the power range in discussion.

Great thread, Don!

A FMIC for $250? Where in the hell can I find a quality FMIC(ebay doesn't counts!!), for $250?

Why not eBay if the seller has plenty of satisfied customers?

eBay is just a market place where buyers meet sellers. As such, there are bound to be good and bad vendors (and customers too). So before anyone here gets discouraged, read this thread - lots of first-hand experience from other DSMers:

I am extremely happy with my $104 FMIC and $100 pipings.

Godspeed intercoolers seem to be doing the trick for most setups. They pretty inexpensive and all over ebay. I'd recommend if anyone is thinking of buying an ANYTHING on ebay, just search the forums and see what people have said about them. You can usually weed through the bullshit.

SSAC has them, but they are out of stock at the moment.

Actually you would get a sniper rifle, gernades, an uzi, chainsaw, and a revolver....

I was going to say," That really looks to GTA." Lol...

Back on topic here, this is defiantly a great starter thread for many. Would have quickly taught me the basics compared to just asking people. Now I have a good place to refer people too :)

Good point!

I will also add that, with the DSMLink, you don’t need the EGT gauge! Use the money on other necessary mods.

The DSMLink can monitor and warn you when there is knock, which is a far better indication of engine trouble (cylinder temperature/timing retardation).
All you need is to monitor the knock counts though your Engine check light.

Also, don't add RTV sealant on your turbo gasket, right dude :)
So, it's the same as buying a gasket right, since it's high temp?:chair:
