No muffler will sound really bad, turbo or not.

It will have alot of the metal sound, it will sound like a lawn mower or truck, worse than a harley.

If that's what you like, go for it

At least get a glasspack or bullet style muffler, it'll filter out the rough sound and you get the nice rumble.

you could go no cat and a cutout so you can turn it down before the buffer if you wanted. i have a no cat 3" exhaust with dual 2.5inch tips (stock appearance almost) and it sounds great and flows great

i had a 300zx (93 model) N/T and I just cut both the mufflers off.. it had one pipe running to the back of the car and a "Y" on it that went to to mufflers..i just cut it off at the y.. it sounded so friggin sweet.. like a ferrari or something..

i'm cuttin the muffler off of my TSi tommorow morning and going to run w/out it for a few days and see how it sounds before i have a custom one built by a hillbilly shop here..

I've driven with nothing but a 3in 02 housing and it was hella loud. Right now I have a Full 3in from the turbine to the end. I use a Dynomax muffler and have a slight turndown that dumps about where the stock cat would be. It is very light and the sound revibes off of the ground back up onto the body making it extremly loud inside. You have to have the windows cracked down at least a little or it will give you a massive headache. I noticed that my car likes to throw flames on the shifts sometimes and it is badass so long as there is no oil or anything under you car to burn. I think you shouldn't do it unless your car is a sat night special and your good buddys with the local law enforcement.

hehe.. its tulsa, oklahoma.. my micron full system on my racebike is ten times louder than any car i've heard and i've yet to get pulled on it.. most farm trucks around here run open headers or glass packs that HURT your hears as they go by.. they tried getting noise restrictions about 2 years ago but they found out that the police harleys couldn't pass their own law!

I have a 2-1/2 dp, 3" exhaust on my 90 gst. No cat no muffler. I have gude cams and a 20g on the car. Ported O2 housing and a 95 manifold. The car had a very deep and grumpy sound but was loud as hell. At idle sitting at a red light the car can pass the "45 second sit 1 car length behind the cop car test". But anything above 2500rpm watch out. It was hard to get a street race. That is because it sounded like a very built 5.0 with cams. The power was sick though. It allowed me to run 25psi on pump and outrun 3g rx7's and mildly worked supras down the mile. I am now going to put in a spin tech 3" in with (2) 2-1/2" out tiped muffler. The only reasons I want to do this is 1 to save money, 2 to save wieght, 3 for more power.

All these are #1 proirity, they are no more or less important than each other.

If I had all the money I wanted I would just go buy a TI exhaust in three and a half inches with a really nice muffler but hey I dont have 2000+!

So the only option I was left with was stainless all the way through in 2 1/2 or 3 inch. But now that I have a bad cv joint I will be spending my money on that.

Gotta love these 10+ year old cars hu guys?!

I already have a 2.5" DP to 3" cat and cat-back but lately I've been thinking about running some oval track/nascar oval pipes under the car. The exhaust would go from cat to an adapter pipe (round to oval) and then exit behind the driver's door. I could possibly install a bullet style muffler right behind the cat.

Exactly correct. I finished my exhaust for my 1G (2.5" tubular o2 with dump and 3" o2back exhaust, straight through. No cat, no muffler). It is very loud and very.....rough sounding. I am in serious need of a decent muffler to 'soften' the tone a bit. I dont mind it being a bit loud, but it sounds really bad (unless under WOT ;)).

I just hate the idea of paying 600-700 bucks for an exhaust just to put a cork on the end of it.
There are many people that dropped their catbacks and ran just open downpipe at the track - and ended up running slower times than with full exhaust. Straight pipe doesn't necessarily yields the best results and HP increase - as well designed exhaust system with good muffler does.

I just installled my 3" downpipe today and I am running it open and i haven't run it yet but I expect it to be very loud and I am not concerned since I just drive it to work right now. I am sure a open 3" even though the sound might be loud will have better gains than a full 3" system all the way to the back of the car. I left my stock muffler on the car to give my car a stock appearance even though it won't look it. Can you say, "I have an exhaust leak officer sorry". HAHAHA :)

If you like your car LOUD, run the exhaust open. I have a full 3" exhaust, no cat, and straight through muffler, and my car is loud. I really wish my car were quieter. Unfortunately, I'm in need of an external waste gate now - short supply of funds means that it is going on the manifold, and this is going to further increase noise.

Did you try porting the WG opening and getting a 38mm flapper from one of the DSM vendors? I think SBR or Turbotrix sells them. Road Race has the 34mm as well I think. I am assuming you are needing an upgrade due to creep?

Call up www.vrsexhaust.com and ask about their pre-fabbed tubing kits that include no muffler. Ask them if they could somehow add extra piping in place of the muffler, then all you would have to do is have a tip welded on if you want.

Don't most race tracks have rules about no open exhaust? How do you plan to pass inspection?
Check out SuperTrapp . Ignore all the bling mufflers. Download the catalog and check out the disk only muffler packs (pic of AC Cobra in the catalog). Screw them right into your exhaust pipe, tune the sound, negligible weight. These things have been around a long time.

Does running no muffler have any power advantage over a straight through muffler? I can't see how it would.

Anyways, I have 2.5" DP and TP with the 3" Thermal cat-back. Not very noisy at all, the Thermal does a good job on not getting noticed unless you're getting on it. Altho soon I am putting on my ported 2G mani, porting my exhaust turbine housing and putting on my 2.5" 02 housing with dump tube. I have a feeling it won't be very quiet. I told my girlfriend my car will be loud but I don't think she understands? :D

Before my car jumped timing, I was thinking of going with an electronic cutout. I was just gonna put it after an aftermarket DP(2.5 in"). Then I'd run my cutout right in place of where the resonator would be. Then I'd run the rest of the exhaust as stock. Sorry guys, but I can't stand the huge after market muffler tips(don't care what size they are). I'll stick with the nice dual stock tip. The ricers have pretty much ruined it for me.
