Ok guys.. I am starting to get worried... I dont know what this problem is and I havent had time to take this into a shop...

When I have the steering wheel locked or near lock and I try to back up or go forward it feels like the brakes are on, and one tire always starts to skip a little bit. I am afraid this problem could be a busted center diff, but I dont know how to verify this and I dont really have the money to take it to the dealer. I live in Santa Rosa,Ca and I dont know where to go to.. should I just go to a trany shop? Or would they not know? How could I tell if this is the problem? Does anyone else have a GSX with this problem? Is this just an AWD thing? Or do I have a serious problem here?!

If anyone has had a broken center diff, How can I tell? Do I just have to take it apart or is there an easy way to tell?

Please help, I am very worried and I just bought this car so I dont have a lot of money to troubleshoot.

Thanks Guys!

Shane

Busted Diff

Yea I had that problem. It was just rear wheel drive. From what i understand the spider gears in the Center Diff are the weakest link in out trannys. Yes both rear wheels would spin at the same time, one would spin going around turns. It was kinda cool cause if you just tappet on the gas the whole rear end ould get squirly like a RWD car. I hope you have a warranty on your car. I took mine to a dealer( big Mistake) they never even figured out what it was. They never even opened the trans. They just said a need a new Trans and Tcase (for $5600) Actually its not that bad it was about 300 for parts and here is a link to help you out. http://www.geocities.com/spencerhut/talon/center_differential_repair.htm

Noooooooo!!!!!! not a busted diff!!! that sucks!

Thanks SlamdTsiAWD! I just heard from the person I bought it from that the transmission was replaced recently so maybe this is from something that was done and possibly under warranty... if not.. i'm fu@#ed.. Does anyone else think this may be the diff? Anyone wanna give me a false sense of hope and tell me its something else? Not CRANKWALK!!)

Thanks guys

yea its your center diff, same thing happened to me, i tried to do it myself but i couldnt get the diff out becuase it was welded shut due to being so hot, i toke it to extreme motorsports and they finished it for $180 only ended up paying like $320 cause i work at a dealership and i get discounts on parts. Try it yourself, its not hard at all, while your in there, do some of the synchros, i think you can get the 3rd and 5th on, you dont even have to drop the tranny

hey-TurboAWDTalon

When I have the money... would you be able to get me a discount on the parts? How much did you pay for parts? My dad is a mechanic to the labor is no biggie but the parts still cost me.. Do you just get wholesale? Can you tell me the part # I would have to order for my 95 GSX?

Thanks again for the replies!!

My Central DIFF also broke half a year ago. Allthough rather then the problems you had, my car wouldnt drive period. Paid like 300$ for a new Central Diff and replaced it ourselves. Not very fun to do.

By the way, anyone know what could result from taking a car out of gear without clutch? Like what could break?

if you do it under light acceleration at low RPM then it does nothing.. you wouldnt want to powershift...lol..

Well conicelli mitsubishi sells the repair kit for $140 + S&H and i got them for $150, its like $220 or something like that list price, i just did it through my dealership so i could have it faster, conicelli is on the dsm.org vendors page, if you say you are from club dsm you get a discount, also you have to buy a washer to shim it, which you dont know which one you need till your in there, also if its to bad you have to polish out the top housing if the gears gouged it real bad, i didnt have to do that extreme did it for me because i didnt make it that far do to my problem, they had to take out my transfer case to get to mine, that part number for 1g's is MD733338 and im almost positive that its the same for 2g's. these are the EXCELLENT directions, i followed, and im only 17 so im sure anyone can do this, http://www.geocities.com/spencerhut/talon/center_differential_repair.htm hope this helps, let us know how it goes

Billy

p.s i coulda done it, if my top housing wasnt welded on
:)

It was acctually moving quite fast, like I was driving and coming to a stop sign and I tryed to push in the clutch to put it into neutral, and the clutch was just impossible to push, and i had to pop it out of gear =(
Bone head move.... but i was just trying to get home, and acctually did it a couple times. Till at a stop sign, i just couldnt get it back into gear. While the car is off now though i can easily shift all gears like butter, but w/ car on and clutch in, it grinds, buzzes like a bastard.... Going into the shop tommorow. =(

What comes in the "repair kit?" Is that new gears? if,"if" my gears are toast, would the repair kit be all I need?

Damn dude, that doesnt sound good.. about the clutch I mean.. Let us know what the problem was when you get it checked :) Hope its not too bad. Good luck.

yea the repair kit comes with 2 gears and a rod that they slide onto, that should be it, what breaks are the gears so put in some new ones and you should be good to go, check to see if you have little metal shavings on your tranny drain plug, in my car, i put in redline mt-90 and the next day my diff broke, so i drained the fluid and it was completly black and smelled, when i put it in it was red.

Billy

Yes all you need is the kit, new tranny fluid, and a washer that you will need to shim the new gears, RTV silicone, to reseal the tranny case, should be less than $200 and take about 4-5 hours of time.

my second day with the talon and in need with help

Yesterday, my parents went to go pick up my new car, a 92 tsi awd. I told my dad to get a flat-bed tow truck or get a trailor that would have all four wheels off the ground. He ignored me and got one of those trailors that support the front end. He called me after getting the car and told me the car wouldn't move, so I thought the worst. When he got home (after calling a flat-bed tow truck), he took the car off the truck and while turning I saw the rear tire spinning :( . To think that my dad was a mechanic almost his whole life, and messed it up is kinda funny. I'm pretty sure the diff is busted. My parents are going to pay for the fix since it was their fault. How much is it going to cost for parts?? My dad works at an auction that has a repair shop so he probably won't have to pay very much for labor. Is their possibly anything else broken??

I like that name CPEED.. you should make a t-shirt or local racing club... and if you arent going to ... can I use it here in Santa Rosa,ca?

cpeed-

That name just sounds cool and is inventive.. Have you ever seen it used yet? if not you should get that copywrited.. Thats cool.. I dont know about where you are but here there are groups of imports that have sort or a racing group and they call themselfs "Vertuosity" which i think is very cool also.. that being said I was wondering if you have started the same sort of thing where you are? That seems like it would be a cool racing club name. like speed only cpeed. I could totaly see that on my window.. If you are not using that name for a street club, or even if you are .. would you mind if I used that name to start a tsuto club out here? it would just be a few friends with imports.. nothing serious.. I thought I should ask you b4 doing it out of respect.. if you dont want me to use it then I will not. Also, have you seen it anywhere else? it seems like an aftermarket company would have snagged it already.. thats so cool.. let me know. And if we get some stickers made up or shirts or something.. I can send you some.
Let me know!
