is it possible to 11's on a lipped and ported big 16g? if so what kind of supporting mods and tunning tools would you need.

this is to settle an arguement between me and a friend. i says no and my friend think it can do it with simple mods

11's are possible w/ a big 16g ported and clipped. Obviously you would need supporting mods such as , full exhaust, injectors, fuel pump, logger, egt guage, and an AFC etc.- to tune that bastard into the 11's... It wont be as easy as slapping on the parts and hitting 11's.... Its all about the tunning and the driver.
Now since I do not have any first hand experiance with this, anyone that would like to add anything or correct anything about what i said.... go right ahead.... but I do know its possible.

11's

There are a few people in my local DSM group who are hovering at 12.0-12.3's with big and small 1g turbos.
They most likely will be into the 11's this season.
You would also deffinitly need a good clutch (act 2600), some form of UICP and all of these guys are running FMIC.
So:
Big 16g
ACt 2600
Fuel pump
550's
SAFC
FMIC
UCIP
MBC
Thats for starters.
Also these guys know what they are doing.
If you are just bench racing than most likely YOU would require more than just this to hit 11's. :)

Similar question - GST

Does this apply to a GST as well, or are the numbers worse for FWD?

To give more info, I have a 97 GST I'm turning into a project car. I've always wanted to do this, and now that I'm older I can have a fun car that stays in the garage all winter, etc. I'm not interested in running 10s or anything. My goal is a well rounded mean street car, including acceleration, cornering, braking, looks, sound, etc. I want it to be completely street, so I'll have a cat, all the emissions stuff, and I want to stay with 93 octane. I wouldn't mind reducing weight by using lighter wheels, seat, whatever, but I will not be gutting the car.

A big16G C&P was suggested to me, with a max of 20PSI on pump gas with support mods (SAFC, FMIC, etc). Do you guys think this is the appropriate turbo to use? If not, what? What kind of performance should I expect?

I realize it has to do with tuning and the driver. I'm very technically minded, so tuning shouldn't be an issue. I'm willing to put in the time and effort there. As for the driver (me), just assume I have a moderate skill level. I can drive, but I'm no expert.

Sorry for the long post :)

I dont really like the B16g for a awd as they tend to need a turbo with more topend to feel fast. You wont be running 20 psi and getting good timing on the street, more like 18....maybe 20 with a larger turbo. People who are in the 11's n 16gs are often MUCH slower w/o racegas.

Its totaly possible. But your gonna need supporting modds, plus the car is gonna need to be lightend, that is for sure. I didnt search for you before i posted but i know that there is a huge post in the racing forum started by one of the moderators talking about track times from your basic t25's all the way to Franks. Just do some research in that forum and it will pretty much give you an idea on what your gonna need to acomplish your goals. Plus your gonna have to be a good driver because being a good driver can make a hell of a difference between a 12 second run and a 11second run! well bro good luck and i hope you can bust an 11!

It is very possible. And as far as know records for both types of 16Gs are 11.59. I am yet to see any evidence that "biger" is better in this particular case...

Back when RRE had big 16Gs just $5 more expensive than the "small" 16Gs it was a no brainer. But now, I would not pay extra $50 for the "big" option.

You can forget 20psi on the street w/ pump gas. I was running 19psi on my Big 16G (FWD). I have all supporting mods for it. My timing on 19psi was terrible. I went to 17psi and I made more HP then at 19psi. This is on the dyno of course.

Oh and a big16g on a FWD? Forget 11's. you will be lucky with 12's. thats with slicks of course. If you want a fast FWD, go with a t3/t4 set up. Those things are monstors on the top end. Thats where FWD plays catch up...

What's your timing at 19psi? on 550s injectors?

My goals for a daily driver are mid to low 12's for now... I am going to be doing a rebuild soon and I will probably go w/ a big 16g ported and clipped for the time being ( obviously w/ all the supporting mods). I then will sell my 16g to someone a little later down the road and go -green :D Then exceed my goal of mid to low 12's.....

basically that the same thing i did. i had to rebuild my motor and my turbo was burnt so i went back with a bigger turbo and the supporting mods to run it. now i just have to start tunning

Realistically it's very possible to reach 11s on a Big16G, however as everyone has said it will take time and alot of effort. I personally am going to try my damndest to do it just to say I can. I'm going to kick my project off this summer so I'll be keeping you updated. Good luck to others looking to hit 11s on their 16Gs.

11's on a 16g

If you were at the shootout lat year watching the FWD class you saw Curt B running low 12's and an 11.9 i think on his fwd small 16g equipped car. I thought it was amazing. My goal will be to get a 12.9 by seasons end with the small 16. With enough effort and tuning hopefully theres a chance.

yep, I was there. Forgot about that one. But it does take more "go fast" mods to run that. "supporting mods" wont get a 16g into the 11's on FWD. corect me if I'm wrong :)

How to differentiate "Go fast" mods with "Supporting" Mods??

Putting a bigger turbo can be supporting mods because I have all FMIC, cams, injectors, heavy weight man.. so i need a bigger turbo to "support" my other supporting mods too :D

J/k...

you forgot...

...stickers man, stickers :) you simply can NOT go fast without an SiR sticker on the back. sheesh. Since I inherited my g/f's 87 for escort as my backup car, I have been trying to get as many stickers as possible on it to help it go fast. so far we have:
red/silver SiR
k&n
flowmaster
5.0
roadster
and for REAL performance we bolted on a hujazz muffler tip. we had to buy bigger attachment screws since the stock exhaust is only 1 1/2 inches wide.
you should see the looks on the faces of the riceboy contingent here in the city when they see it roll by on the way to the parts store with 30 something me behind the wheel :) priceless
