Alright guys..I'm ready for a bigger turbo for my car. I want to upgrade badly but this smog thing in CA is really bugging me. Will putting a Big 16G fail on smog tests? And will it fail on the machine or by visual? I don't want to go through the trouble of dismounting the turbo every 2 years. What about the other mods to support the 16G (ie..dp, port/polish o2 and manifold, fuel pump, bigger injectors, etc.). Thanks for the info. And for those people in CA that have these mods, did you have trouble smogging it? Thanks!

Besides a visual inspection you should be fine with the smog test. Just make sure your cat is on (duh!) The turbo itself or its supporting mods shouldn't effect your emmisions. I passed by a wide margin with full exhaust, 16g, 550's, and other stuff. I am in Pa so the test may be more strict but I wouldn't worry. :)

haha...yeah...we have the same testing here in Phx (IM 240)and I'm up soon, too.

half the time they can't tell anything anyway...

I even went through the local dragstrip techline during a race...and they said "pretty much stock?" even though they were staring at a Frank 3 with a deltagate and a huge FMIC.

some people.

Visual

It's strict here in Alaska as California rules apply here.
Don't be ricy. No stickers. Make it stock in appearance by making applying darker colors. Things can blend in without a lot of color. :)

I doubt the smog tech will know (or care to find out) the difference between a 16G and the stock T-25. If they ask, just tell them the turbo is stock. Worked for me when I brought my baby in for smog (she passed easily here in Cali).
