I did not know what forum to put this in, hopefully I won't piss anyone off by putting this post here. :D

I have a 1999 GSX 28,xxx miles, and it sounds like the lifters tick sometimes. Not all the time, and it is NOT the injectors ticking. It is louder and it does not always happen. I am pretty sure it is lifter tick, but I thought it was only something that happened to older first gen cars. I have an appointment for the 20th of this month. I guess I'll know then what the problem is, but they listed the work to be done as "replace cam followers" So that means lifters right? It is under warranty so it's not big deal (No $$ out of my pocket), but has anyone ever heard of a 1999 doing this? If it matters at all, I run Castrol synthetic 10/40. I live in California, it doen't JUST happen when it gets hot outside either, it happens whenever it feel like it. It will go away if I rev the engine a little, but then it will come back within a couple seconds. I have only the factory oil pressure guage, but it always reads in the "Normal" range, just above the first line at idle. Hopefully someone will have some imput as to what this may be, or a list of other things I should check. thanks everyone

mine does the exact same thing, im pretty sure its basically normal and cant really be fixed. from what ive read the only solution really is just make sure your using the oem oil filter, and possibly a slightly thicker oil. other then that theres nothin you can do. cleaning it out and stuff will fix it temporarily

new lifters

the only real way to fix lifter tick is to replace the crap ass factoy lifters with the new revised lifters. the factory lifters had tiny holes for the oil to flow through, so clogging them happened more often than someone asking about venting into the atmosphere. you're going to need 16 of the revised lifters. i'm not sure on what thread, but if you do a search there was a link to a place that sold lifters for i think $11 each! or something along those lines. alls i know is that they were cheap compared to satan ass dealership prices.

my bad, theyre $7.74 each! holy hell! just search for lifters....you'll see it in the title. and lifter tick happens to both 1st gen and 2nd gen DSMs bro.

I ran with mine ticking for a long time. Then, last summer, suddenly the knock sensor decided this was a big deal and no boost. So, I'd say lifter tick - no big deal. Lifter tick and no boost = new lifters.

Ok, so I guess second gen cars do this to. So when I go in and have the lifters replaced will the factory put in "Revised" lifters or the same crappy type I have now? I'll let you guys know how things owrk out after I get them replaced. I have an appointment for the 20th, and I imagine it will take a couple days, so I'll probably let you guys know late next week, or early the following week. Thanks everyone.

nope, the 2g lifters aren't any better than the 1g

I'm not sure if they would put the new lifters in, you might want to try to give them a call. also, installing new lifters really doesn't warrant an appointment at the dealership at all. it's an easy sunday afternoon job. and are you serious about leaving your car at the dealership for a couple of days while they replace frikken lifters? i say just get he revised ones yourself and pop those hotties in. you'll feel much better doing the job yourself and you'll learn more about your DSM. there's a write up at vfaq.com under the engine section. honestly, replacing lifters isn't bad at all and isn't a worthy enough problem to bring it to the dealership for. i you didn't want to get your hands dirty, shouldnt have got a DSM q=P. but boy, all the time you put into your car is going to be worth it! good luck bro.

Well first off, the dealer will do the work for FREE, including parts (It's under warranty) so that is the main reason for not doing it myself. Why pay $11 per lifter x 16 lifters, plus valve cover gasket, if I don't have to. Second, I know I would probably learn a little about my modenr engine, by doing it myself, but I am not new to engine building. I am a Chevy guy at heart (Look at my link in my sig. On page two click on "My other project") Although my Cehvy is a regualr single cam dinosaur, I don't think I would really learn THAT much about me new engine by doing it myself, certainly not enought to justify the cost. I have read a few manualy and seen preny of pics, and since I am mechanicaly minded, I'm sure I would be able to figure things out if the time presented itself.
I was also under the impression that the revised lifters WERE 2G lifters, that is my whole reason for this post in the first place. I didn't think 2G lifters had the ticking problem that my car apparnetly has.
I am not sure that the dealership will keep my car for a couple of days, I just have a feeling that the dealership will take it's sweet time, they always do. When I had to get my MAF replaced a few months ago it took 2 days, and if the parts were in stock (I'm not sure if they were) it should only have taken half an hour or less. But like i said, they take there time.
Thanks again. I'll keep everyone posted.

someone should search more. they changed the lifters over in 98 to the newer ones, so from 90-97 approx they used the same lifters. the ones out now are even better than the ones in the 98-99 cars. its warranty work so don't wory about it. i don't uderstand why people suggest to do it yourself and spend about 150 when it can be done for free. use either factory or mobil one filters. mobile one filters work better for me than the factory, but they are also twice as much.

Well I got it back from mitsu, he told me one of the injectors is making the loud ticking which is "normal". He also suggested that if I wanted to put in the new lifters it would cost $650.00....

Well I said screw that, so I guess its not warranty work after all.

:sigh:...... I guess I could try and clean the injectors but I dont think that would do anything, and I dont want to waste money buying stock ones if Ill end up with 550's later.

Oh and he topped off the conversation with telling me I had an exhaust leak around the manifold area. Weeeee.

I believe there are actually 2 or 3 generations of revised lifters. Did you read through the thread at the top of the Parts Talk section?

BTW, I usually use a purolator oil filter (when I can't get the stock one) and Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 (old version). My lifters would still tick sometimes (stock lifters).

At my last oil change I used a PureOne oil filter (the shiny blue ones) and the new style of Mobil 1 synthetic 10w30 (all Mobil 1 is now of this new type) and the lifters no longer tick. They will tick sometimes when I first start the car, but it goes away.

When I crank my car for the first time each day, I do this: I don't crank the car and then just let it sit to warm up. Instead, I crank it, sit for just a few seconds, and back out of the driveway. I drive very slowly down the street, going through the gears very slowly, yet letting the RPM rise slowly to about 3000-3500RPM before I shift. This gets the oil pressure up and makes the ticking go away pretty much instantly.

if you read my post above, i mention the 3 generations of lifters.

650 for lifters is insane. check out the sticky post about the 7.74 lifters. buy some of those and a new valve cover gasket kit, and make sure it includes the spark plug seals. changing the lifters is a pretty easy job. pull the injectors out and check the orings, replace if needed. injector tick is barely noticeable anyway, so don't worry about that.

Well if it were definitly my lifters, then Id go and get those puppies from the guy in Texas ASAP. But since they diagnosed this to be injectors rather then lifters, I guess Iam stuck to just deal with this now. Unless my plans for a 16g w/ 550's comes sooner then expected, then Ill just get those.

BUT.....you say injector tick is not noticable? Well the sound Iam getting is so damn loud you can hear it inside the car while its running (usually my exhaust drowns everything out), and when I pop the hood its even louder. I dont know if I should believe SATAN or not, I still think its the lifters. Is there anyway to check for sure before I start replacing things?

And since they also told me theres a slight leak at the manifold caused by a gasket possibly, it makes me think that could cause it also. I say that because I remeber reading a post by someone sayin that caused a loud ticking sound for them too, and the symptoms sound similar to mine. They told me to just retighten everything down though, so I dont see how that could fix a leak.

Grrrr, I hate dealerships.

lol dsm1995gst, you drive around your block every day just so your lifters dont tick?
