2nd Gear Synchro??

There is a 97' 5 speed GST with 87k miles that I am looking at buying. I talked to the owner the other day and he said the car was in great shape and it looks like it but the thing is it doesn't have any struts and a 2nd gear "bump"! He said the car has an aftermarket clutch in it and he also said that every DSM he has driven has had a 2nd gear "bump" to it. He said that it is easy to make it happen when you let out the clutch too fast. Besides the clutch, tires, and 3" turboback the car is stock. My friend thinks it sounds like the synchro for 2nd is going bad. What do you guys think?

If it is the synchro then what is the best way to fix it and how much money am I looking at then?

Its about $500 for parts to rebuild the transmission yourself otherwise it really depends on what you want done. Anywhere from $850 for buschur racing to do a stock rebuild up to about $3000 and more if you want. Sounds like its the 2nd gear synchro which is common to go bad in these cars.
And you said it doesn't have struts. Was there a reason they took them out?

Bad synchro is going to be a rebuilt transmission. My synchros went out in 3rd and 5th and I drove it for awhile like that. I just had to keep my hand on the shifter and hold it in gear. If I didn't hold it in gear it would just pop out under any kind of load.

Thanks I just looked at the JS stage 1 rebuild kit but it says something about recommending an LSD. I'm stock! Would I really need to worry about that yet?

About the struts. They aren't out of the car but might as well be because they are horrible. Just to get her on the road I'm thinking about GR2's

Haha wow that would get uncomfortable after an hour or so down the high way.

There aren't any syncros in reverse, maybe that's your problem :p Seriously though, we don't have synchros for reverse...

Smartass response FTW!

1990 Laser RS non-turbo. By year 1993 somebody wrecked 2nd to 3rd. Bought it in '94. One repair station said in 2010 I needed a new tranny. Found a good tranny guy who was smart enough to not drain tranny fluid until I got under the car, shown a light on the stream, and what do you know, no reflections from the light on the stream equals no metal bits equals no tranny swap-out. Same Tranny guy in 2012 said "just do what you've been doing all this time". Babied it until 2015, double-clutch usually.

Got sick of the whine/grind and at one point just slammed it into 3rd -- make it or break it, I didn't care anymore.

Fixed it ... somehow I felt it get loose under my hand on the stick and it was ready to go up, and went for it ... go figure.

We'll see how long it lasts.
