I know these 2 have been talked about before but i though i would like to add my comments specialy about the Phantom Grip "LSD" . I have read many man things about the Phantom Grip on this site before i made my purchase and descision. It was for all the posts on DSM Talk that made me buy it. Well my clutch was going and i always wanted LSD but didnt wanna dish out so much cash on the real stuff after i dumped so much money in my car already.

Ok my car is a 1992 Hyundai Sonata with a 4g63 turbo engine/tranny swap,T3/T4 turbo with custom tubular header and deltagate external wastegate 20 psi boost 3" full turbo back exhuast, Haltech and more. Yes i know its alot of money into a Hyundai but it makes agreat sleeper. So now u see why i wanted some more grip and went with the LSD. After reading so much about the Phantom Grip on here and talking to the Phantom Grip guys and them telling me the standard spring is good to 400 Hp i descided to give it a shot.

First off i had the ACT 2600 with street disk installed with the Phantom grip. The clutch is amazing as most of you already know. So much better then the custom clutch i had before. It bites hard and takes the abuse nice. Had to break the clutch in before i could test the Phantom Grip.

After the clutch was broken in i attempted a launch to test the Phantom Grip. I got the usual 1 wheel spin at first and was very disapointed. I talked to the guys at Phantom Grip who were very helpfull and nice. They told me the Phantop Grip needs to work in with my gears so give it some time.

So about a week went by and i kept doing my normal hard driving. So i decided to test it out once again after aweeks of driving on it. This is what i noticed. If i rev the engine up like a mad man and dump the clutch it will spin one wheel like always. But if i do a proper launch with half gas half clutch slip like how it should be the thing works amazing. Every single time i lay a long ass patch and continue all of 2nd gear with both wheels spining.
I noticed acceleration is much much better and i am only running on 195 Blizzak snow tires. So i am really looking forward to the summer when my sticky 225's go on and see how great it really is in cutting my wheel spin in 1st and 2nd.

Install on the Phantom grip was simple and straight forward, how ever there wasnt much of instructions included with the part.

I honestly dont remember what place i bought the 2 at because i was selling a JDM engine and some shop owner called looking to buy some engines from me. I found out he sold ACT and the phantom grip and i made the purchase. I paid 380 for the Clutch and 250 for the Phantom Grip U.S prices ofcourse.

I am very happy with both the products for now and we will see how the Phantom Grip holds up over time.

Thanks and sorry for the long post ! Keep boostin :)

Well i'm glad to hear you like the setup. I to am doing the same thing, the only differance is that my clutch had 500 miles on it before my crank walked. So I decided while I was doing a new engine I would add the phantom grip.

I agree that the instructions are less than usfull ( mine didn't have any in the box and the ones they faxed me really didn't tell me much). I am currious what they told you for the break-in proceedure? The instructions they faxed me didn't mention break-in any where.
Thanks, Chuck

They told me to drive the car a bit so they phantom grip has time to set in i guess. They said i will notice the best performance out of the unit after the 4-5 th pass down the drag strip.

how do you like your phantom grip?
how long you had it?
and do you have any before after timeslips?
and what pound spring did you get?
and your take on its performance.

sorry for all the ?'s, i've got traction now, but not for long.

thanks

My experience with the BM Tranny piece was simialr... at first it didn't seem to do much at all, but now that I have some miles on it, it acts like an LSD should.

I like my Phantom Grip alot now cause it is actually doing what it was suppose to do :)

I have had it in the car for 2 months and maybe 8000 kms about 5000 miles or so.

I dont have any before or after slips. I never got th ecar to the track before cause it was never running right and never tuned right so i didnt bother. But once my Haltech is fully tuned and the track opens here this year i will for sure be testing my entire cars set up.

I got the sprongs it comes with and i was told by the Phantom Grip guys that its good for 400 hp.

I definatly noticed the difference in accelaration from before and after the Phantom Grip install. Before i would just spin and accelerate but now its still spining but not as much and i can actually feel the car pulling hard while the wheels are still spinning. I am happy with the unit and hope it holds up as time goes on.

Just as slwo spyder said at first i wasnt happy but once it wore in and got some miles on it it was working great.

I'm doing an ACT 2100, and a Phantom Grip LSD with a standard spring. I'm thinking this will help wiht the launch, so only time will tell. I'd do the work myself, but being a good basic parts swapper, and a mechanic, well I'm no mechanic. So we'll see what time has to say to it all.

The install is pretty straight forward. I even think it can be done without taking the trany out. Just remember when taking apart the trany and when putting it back together that it needs to be shifted into reverse or the gear box will be frozen up. If you have any questions when taking it apart email me and i walk you through it.

I appreciate the help, but I've got too many projects going on right now. I didn't really want to pull my tranny to do the clutch myself either. I know pc stuff liek the back of my hand, but when it comes to cars, if it isnt' somehting i cna do in two hours, I'll let someone else do it so it doesn't end up vehicle #3 on stands in the yard.

I got the Eclipse back today. Somedays i can't win. Stupid through-out bearing squeks when its cold. Oh well two blocks, and its back to normal. Like the ACT 2100 alot, and the phantom does help alot. But the phantom just isn't enough, ordered nittos and hopefully this combination will work.

Gary Marsh did mine, but he wanted me to bring it to him, then he told me a shocking price which made me give him the whole job. But anyway i think the LSD slowed my really almost stock setup down.

After having it, well I have to sya its better then stock. Save your moeny for the quaiffe. The phantom grip is how it says, but the quaiffe also has a lifetime, and compitition warranty, menaing if you bust it at 9,000 rpms in first gear on even a fwd, They'll replace it.

ok, round up all your tools, get a case of beer, and a curseword dictionary. oh yeah, a service manual and a tourque wrench are mandatory.

get the tranny off the engine, open it up, take the differential out, and install the unit in the spider gear assembly.

hahahaha I made that sound easy...
go to www.vfaq.com proceed to transmission/driveline. theres a vfaq for the bm tranny insert.
