I just got a 97 eclipse GS with 45k miles on it. When trying to shift into first even though the clutch is all the way down I cant put it in gear at times.... i have to play around a bit with the clutch. It also grins some times when going in to second. I am thinking that getting a new clutch and a short shifter will fix the problem but I may be wrong. A friend of mine had the same problem with a 95 Eclipse he has had. Does anyone have an idea as to what the problem could be?

Also when getting a new clutch. Any recomendations? I am looking to get a performance clutch.

What do you mean by freeplay? the travel distance to the clutch point is really long if that is what your asking.

If i remember right when the car is off it does the same thing.

CHANGE YOUR TRANNY FLUID. a CLUTCH WILL NOT HELP SHIFTING. a CLUTCH IS LIKE THIS ALL IT DOES IS ENGAGE THE TRANS TO THE FLYWHEEL. i HAVE HEARD A MILLION PEOPLE SAY IF THEY GET A NEW CLUTCH THERE GRINDING WILL GO AWAY. gUESS AGAIN A CLUTCH HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH A TRANSMISSION OTHER THAT IT IS THE CONNECTING LINK. TRY SOME gm SYNCROMESH, i PUT SOME IN MY GVR4 WITH 152k ON THE TRANS AN IT SHIFTS LIKE BUTTER.

This is a shot in the dark but check the clutch fluid reservoir. The fuild drained out of mine once and I had trouble shifting...

do you mean BG SynchoShift? or do you really mean putting General Motors Synchromesh into your tranny?

Spoof: freeplay is how far your pedal moves down before you feel pressure. lets say there is 1 inch of freeplay, that means you have to depress the clutch 1 inch before it starts disengaging...which could be the problem...at least for me it was.

IRalliWannaRace....

If the clutch is not fully disengaging due to a too low engaggement point or a faulty clutch master or slave cylinder then you ain't gonna shift too well no matter the shape of your tranny.

Spoofy....

Adjust the egagement point higher and see if it helps at all. Maybe you'll be lucky but if this works it's prolly only temporary since it's prolly due to a dying clutch master or slave cylinder. But on a 97 I wouldn't think the master or slave should be bad unless there's a kick ass clutch in there. Definately go with synthetic fluid in there. Check for leaking fluid where the clutch master enters thru the firewall. Those are some places to start.
