Clicking on hard turns? Help! New DSMer

Hi, I'm new to the dsm forums and to the dsm's. I've been in mustang groups mainly for the past 2 years, but now I'm thinking of fixing up a eclipse turbo either gst or gsx. I bought a 90 GS-T and it has a few problems that I need help on. First of all like I said in the subject on hard cornering it makes a fast ticking/popping sound. Someone told me it may be tie rod ends, but I wanted to check in here as well. Now what could this be, what is it more than likely and how much will it cost for parts to fix and is it an easy job I can do myself? Whew that was a lot. Ok now one more thing on the highway at speeds above 60mph the car is unstable, I mean I have no problem keeping it in a lane, but when I change lanes the whole car acts as if it was a very windy day. Meaning it sways back and forth very fast, it doesn't shake really but rather just feels really springy left and right. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have had a few problems with clicking during turns. I replaced the inner and outer joints (outer causing the popping), and still had clicking only under hard turning. My car was unstable at hwy speeds, and lane changes were scary sometimes. Since I've had the car, I've noticed some play in the steering wheel. I got the whole steering rack replaced with a new one (which included new tie rods) and I have no more problems. All clicking is gone, and MUCH more stable at hwy speeds.

I only got the whole thing replaced because I have an extended warranty that covered it. If I had to pay for it, I would have replaced it piece by piece until I had no more problems. It ended up being about $1300 with labor.

So some of the clicking was coming from some part of the steering assembly. Hope this helps.

Serious?

So is this serious then guys? I mean can it go without fixing for a few months. Is it dangerous? Also is this a big job to do yourself? What kinda cash are we talking about here if I did it myself? Thanks!

Well, If you have the know-how on cv joints, it's a hell of a process. The haynes won't even tell you how to do it. I haven't priced out the cost, but more than likely it'll be a little bit more than what you'd think.

If you are going to just do the CV joints, then you can have the axles rebuilt with brand new inner and outer joints (don't get refurbished ones) for about $125 an axle from Raxles.com. They do great work. Taking the axles off isn't that big of a deal. But I doubt you can rebuild a CV joint yourself if you have never done it before. Like Bling said, I have never seen anything on rebuilding one before.

The clicking is most likely your axles, my boots are ripped and i am replacing both axles on saturday. replacing them is not that big of a deal from what i have heard...well see. you can goto pepboys and buy rebuilt axles for something like $40ea with a $125 core charge, and reaplacing the axle is cheaper than buying a new cv boot. thats an estimate cause i have no idea how much mine are but thats what i was told. as for the scaryness on the freeway, check your tires for proper inflation and treadwear then get an alignment, when you replace the axles you are going to have to have it done anyway also check your camber, mine gets interesting and i have a lot of negative camber in the front.
good luck

I have a raxle axle sitting in my living room. Can you do it without draining the tranny? I've been trying to find some more BG synchroshift before I did it. If I don't need it then I'll do it tomorrow morning.

Cheers!

you dont need to drain the tranny fluid but i would advise having someone help you so that you minimize loss. when you pull the axle tranny fluid will leak out. if you get the axles in fast you barely loose any (i didn't loose much with mine). also have a clean drain pan under it so that if it leaks too much you can put it back
good luck
