Clicking Sound - CV Joint Boots not torn

I have a pretty severe clicking sound that I believe is coming from the passenger side front. Initially, when I put the car in gear, I hear a slight "thuck" sound. After driving to work and back one day, it progressed very rapidly into a fairly audible clicking sound noticable when slowing down or accellerating from a stop.

I checked the CV joint boots and they aren't torn or anything. I had my transfer case checked last year (they said they checked it). Any ideas? Anyone have the CV joints go bad without boot failure? How can I check without tearing it apart? Could it be the transfer case?

I appreciate any help or advice. Thanks.

Actually, I was replacing driveshafts on one girl's FWD Eclipse a couple of months back. She swore the clicking was coming from the right side CV joint before the joint snapped and the right side CV joint boot was split in half. She bought a rebuilt passenger side driveshaft, I put it in - and nothing, the car wouldn't move. Of course it was the driver side CV joint - with the boot perfectly intact. Who would ever guess...

Hi. This has nothing to do with our cars but my friend who has a HONDA!!! is having similar problems with her driver side axle. The boot isn't torn or making any clicking sounds but when the car is raised up, there is upward and sideward movement on the wheel. There is also like a 'rubbing sound' when making a left turn or sometimes when its making a slight left when going at freeway speeds. I thought the lugnuts were loose but it seems like the cv joint itself has play in it. Do you think the joint is bad? thanks for the info...

My Talon had the clicking coming from the driver side and the CV boot was not torn. What was wrong was the driveshaft needed to be replaced. I think the part was like $125.00, and I'm not sure on the labor. But once that was replaced, the clicking was gone.

clicking

I also have some stupid clicking noise that seems to be coming from the back of the car but only happens from a start in first gear. My CV boots are not torn. Well anyway I don't have time to figure it out and my driveshaft seems to be fine( I had it off the car to put a new yoke on).

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess you answered my question, yes, it can be still be the CV joints or something similar even though the boots look good. I guess I'm going to have to tear it apart. Thanks again.

I have been in a couple of cars that had CV joint problems.

When they start to wear, you will only notice a pulsating grinding noise when making a turn. Usually it is only in one direction. The sound seems to be non-existent when going straight.

The clicking noise some of you people have been describing almost sounds like wheel bearings.

CV joints can be unpredictable. I have known people to drive months on bad ones and I have heard other ones that have seized without warning.

It is strange how noises sometimes can transmit through metal parts on a car and appear to be coming from a completely different place than where they really are.

clicking

I know it may sound stupid, or not even possible, but a co-workers 95 Z24 has a clicking coming from this passenger side front...from a stickng brake pad... Dont know if it is possible, and its hard to diagose a clicking w/o hearing it, but its worth a short, i suppose...

Before my cv joint went bad on my pulsar, the wheel would vibrate violently (felt like a bad strut)while cruising at like 45-50 mph. In my experiences, there has been plenty of warning before a cv joint broke.

This may sound even more stupid...
check your lug nuts.
I thought I broke my CV in my subaru last year, and limped home at 30mph, only to find out my lugs had loosened and were clicking on one wheel, thumping on the other.

Well, I found out what was making the clicking sound in my car. I took off the wheel, and removed the caliper and inspected the brake pads. Everything looked good. Then I remembered that the lug nuts seemed awful loose when I was taking them off. DESTRUX was correct, I put everything back together, tightened the lugs, and the clicking sound was gone.

Thank god I didn't just keep driving. I almost got the attitude that I would just drive it until it broke or got really bad thinking it was the CV joint.

I've seen too many cars on the side of the highway missing a wheel. I always thought "what an idiot". I guess it's odvious, but check those lug nuts. Thanks for all your advice.
