I haven't heard any actual REASON to get it. Is there any benefit to getting them?
Dont know if id consider this a real "reason" but if your going to a SMIM then you don't have to worry about relocating the coil packs. I wrote to bushcur not to long ago inquiring about their COP set up and this is the response i got

These systems can handle over 600 hp capable car. The benefit to upgrading to this set up is more reliability and better performance in the upper rpm and boost range. It would deff. clean up under the hood as well/

Thanks

It usually delivers a more powerful spark. When you start adding more boost, you also have to add alot of fuel to keep the knock down and eventually it reaches a point where the stock ignition has trouble igniting the fuel and air, a stronger spark is needed. start watching peoples cars when they first start modifying them because this is often overlooked, and you'll see them stomp on the gas and the car will stumble and backfire a couple times as its accellerating, its kinda funny. cop systems started being used to as a solution to this problem. dont get it just cause it looks spiffy.

You're money is better spent elsewhere IMO. My buddy made 776awhp on a bone stock 1g ignition. That tell ya something?

Actually for a waste spark system the stock coil work extremly well. With waste spark you have half the time for the coils to charge as compared to a sequential system such as motec. If you have sequential control over the coils then you can do a good job with COP's because you now have the advantage of twice the charge time, so the coils can be twice as small. However on a stock ecu the stock mitsubishi coils are extremly efficient and work extremly well. The stock coils have gone 9's in DSM's and I know Curt Brown was on stock coils as of the shootout so they can go at least 10's in an EVO.

If you want to play with the big boys you then look at the MSD coils (or similliar like RX7 units if you want OEM quality). I don't know how shepard does it on the buschur COP system but he does. Fat chance of him sharing that information.

Everyone uses the Chrysler 300 coils, its a large bandwagon mod, 99.9999% of DSMers never need but for some reason people still get them.

jdmjason,
what kind of coils are those in your picture/post?
