Colored gauges, needle color???

Ok, I want to put white gauge faces in. I found a place called http://www.blackcatcustom.com that can make white gauges with some custom lettering and things. My question is anyone ever change the color of their gauge needles. I was told that the orange paint comes off the needles easy and you can take some glass paint or even red lens paint and then change the color. Anyone ever done this before?

I was told that as long as you remember where you took them off at you don't have to recalibrate them. I wonder if a sharpe' marker would work?

You can sand the red off... then paint it, probably if you do a real good tape job, yeah sharpies would probably work, It's not too hard to recalibrate either, I had to take all my gauges out so I could put in some blue LEDS to light my gauge faces. They've been sanded so they're not yellow anymore.

How hard would it be to change the rest of my interior (amber) lights to red. I know that the light itself is not amber. There is some kind of amber plastic insert that is put in between the light and dash that makes then that look that color. You guys have any suggestions?

Colors....

I'm not sure about the lights behind the center piece, but if they are just bulbs like behind the guages, you can buy these "condom" type things that come in different colors. You just slide them over the bulb.

Anybody got an idea on redoing the light rings around the cigarete lighter and some of the buttons? I think the actual buttons would be easy, but those plastic pieces look like they might actually be colored orange.

i'm not sure how any of this goes on a 2G but those of you with a 1G i'll be posting pics up on my site when i get around to it. I'm changing ALL the interior gauge lights from those lamps to blue LEDS. It's a bitch, it's crazy, it's expensive and it's harder than $hiet. Anyone who wants to do this mod... i suggest you get some transparant paint. you can get it at any hobby store. If you wanna go ahead an do it basically all you do is take the gauge faces off and sand the backs of them with 200 grit sandpaper, then paint the backs of them with xparant paint and it should be all good. The only reason I went with leds is cuz they last about 10 years or more and for soem odd reason i'm always burning out light bulbs in my dash.

I heard that the buttons would not be that difficult but the cig lighter piece is colored plastic. I think it would be easier to just unplug the light. Maybe you could use some of that red lens paint that I have seen around. Most of the other buttons are just amber colored peices of plastic between the light and the dash. Just remove those and put a colored plastic piece in between. I was thinking of trying to use those little color folder tabs that keep you folders orginized in a file cabinet. Sounds kind of cheezy I know, I bet it will work... I checked they change light color nicely, and they would be easy to cut and mold into place.

That'd be nice if it was just a colored piece :). I'm getting rid of the cigarette lighter anyway (I'm putting one in that little armrest compartment just for charging my cell phone) and putting a little lock in there that will cut power to the fuel pump. No way in hell a thief is going to figure that out.

whoever successfully does the mod (changing all of the interior dash lighting, including needles) should post a step by step how-to thread. That would make things easier because I am now thoroughly confused.

And with that post folks I am no longer a newbie on this forum

The little piece of plastic around the cigarette lighter is colored. I recently took the center console out and the bulb that connects to it is clear. And when I looked at the plastic it didn't look like anything was painted on it....so the plastic is that ugly yellow color.

Ok, I did a little test with a "SHARPIE" marker. I marked over a few of the interior lights with red, and it worked pretty well. I think only red would work because amber is a shade of red anyway. Probably would not work with blue or green. I ended up using some "goo gone" to remove it. Just thought I would share my findings. The reason I tested it was because I am pretty sure you can easily remove all the color tabs behind the dash with the exception on the dials and levers in the heating controls, and the cig lighter piece. They seem to be preformed colored pieces, so I think you would need to use the sharpie (outside) on the levers and dials. Some lens paint on the cig., and then mold some of you own colored plastic peices for the rest of the lights and mount them between the light source and the dash somehow... Does anyone know if you have to remove the dash to get to the back of the cruise control panel and the heater and defroster buttons?
