You aren't going to be able to run without valve guides. I assume you mean replacing the valve guides, or maybe the valve stem seals. I didn't replace valve guides since it is pretty expensive. I replaced the seals, which wasnt really too costly it doesnt smoke or anything and i'm not having any problems with the head.

What are the cons of having a rebuilt head without valve guides besides smoking in between shifts? Any performance loss or harm to the motor?
between shifts? try all the time. you would go through oil very quickly. I had one bad valve seal and i went through a qt every 700 miles.

There would also be boost leaks and under cruising conditins it would run poorly due to oil displacing much of your gas/air mixture.

did you forget to put them in? or ran out of money?

Well I had a rebuilt head put on. The motor then jumped timing bending all 8 valves. The shop I had everything done at had a head that they told me was recently rebuilt around 6k miles ago. Everything was properly done but the machinist forgot to put in valve stem seals. They assured me that there wouldn't be any negative affects from it, except from smoking. Now I'm becoming skeptical of this.

I needed a laugh today, thanks

:)

find out why it was taken off the car at only 6k miles? maybe because there's no seals? take it back to the shop, or to another shop and see what they will charge you for putting those seals in. or get yourself a spring compressor and $20 worth of seals and follow the VFAQ on changing them.
