Coolant temp needle goes up then down while running.

I have a 2G non turbo. When I am driving it it is almost all of the time running at normal temperature when suddenly the coolant temperature needle goes up to about 3/4 or a bit over that and then comes back down to normal temp. The whole process lasts about 4 or 5 seconds. I have noticed that it happens with the air conditioner on or off but if it is very hot outside it will do it with less frequency than if it is not hot outside. I live in Puerto Rico so when I mean hot I mean sunny and around 90F and not hot would be at night which is maybe 75F. What could be causing this problem? Both fans are working.

I want to fix this before it causes other problems

Burp the coolant system. Sounds to me like you might have air trapped in the system.

Could be alot of things, from a flakey cooling fan to a head gasket to a bad gauge or sender. The hayes manual will have a troubleshooting list

When I first started having the problem, the thermostat was replaced. The problem did not go away. Someone else suggested that it may be air trapped in the cooling system but I dont know if that would cause behavior like this.

I would suspect a bad sensor or wiring at the sensor.

It could be a bad themostat.
