Do Eclipses & Talons Share Engines with Neons???

My friend has a 1998 Plymouth Neon and he's been doing some research on building up his engine to support more boost from his HRC turbo. In reading, he said that he found out that the Eclipses and Talons share the same engine as the Neons. Is this true, or do they possibly only share certain parts? If this is true, do DSMs have the same infamous leaking head gasket problem as the Neons have? I am currently looking to buy a 1G AWD turbo DSM and I'd really like to know this ahead of time. Thanks for any help you guys can give me...

history lesson

here's a short lesson in this, so u dont get torn to pieces on this board, the early talons, eclipses, lasers have the 4g63 engines. Made solely by mitsubishi. There were nonturbos @ 135 hp, and turbos @195 hp. The flagship model was the tsi awd and the gsx that had the turbo power and all wheel drive. Now in 95-99 the laser was dropped. Talon and eclipse were kept, they have the SAME mitsu 4g63 in all turbo front and awds, but the non turbos received the chrysler engine the 420a. THe 420a can be found in the neons, sebrings and avengers i believe. Anyways, the engines are still different, the exhaust and intake sides have been switched between the neon and the eclipses. On the 95-99 eclipse the intake is closer to the firewall, and the in the neon the exhaust side is closest to the firewall. This is how the neon has the 150 hp rating instead of the 135-140 hp rating that the eclipse and talon got from the same block. If u are looking at a early 1g, then forget it, no parts will match. Im sure others can elaborated on this topic as well.

Very good and thurough (sp?) answer Dsm-N-69n.

RU2SLOW? - Got to www.dsm.org - There you will find all that you need to know when looking to purchase a DSM. The only DSM to consider (in my opinion) is a turbo model, which has the 4G63. If you are considering an AWD model, that is what you will have.

2nd gen turbos had the 4g64, 2nd gen N/As had the chysler 420a neon motor

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I came across a little bit more uninformed than I really am. I have been looking pretty heavily into the 1G turbo Talons and Eclipses for a while now, and I know that they have the 4g63 engines, I know all of the horsepower ratings, and the changes in the models- overall I'm pretty familiar with these models. However, I haven't really done much research on the 2Gs or the non-turbo DSMs since these are not the cars that I am interested in buying. I have gone to www.dsm.org and have looked through the FAQs and the factory brochures for the years in which I am interested. Knowing what I have read and learned up to this point, this is why I could not understand what my friend was talking about when he told me what he read about the Neon engines. I am not looking to swap any parts over either, just trying to clarify some things that confused me a bit. Thanks again for all your info though guys- its always great to learn somethin new from these posts.

PS- I'll be getting a 92-94 GSX or TSI by the end of summer- Im a little partial to the AWD turbo models....traction + VRRRROOOMMMM SWOOSH...hehe

Yes, the 420A comes in 2G N/T Eclipse/Talons, Neons, Sebrings, Avengers, and PT Cruisers. The Neon does have a different head setup and the additional 10HP rating comes from the cams. And I am not aware of any leaking head gasket problems on Eclipse/Talons. PEace...JIM
