Lastly are you talking about the ecu or tcu? Ive never been much of an automatic tranny guy but this is the first I have heard of an eprom tcu. Eprom ECU's are great because you can use them for special custom chips or DSMLink to tune with.

foreignmuscle.com Hit dave up he can explain it all to you. He uses the Eprom TCUs to modify shift points. It has been proven to work on his 1G all wheel drive talon running low 10s should be into the 9s but he doesn't have a cage yet, a 4g63 swapped eagle summit, and a few other 'local' dsms.

Hope that helps and leads you into the right direction. My '96 TCU is also an eprom. But i have since switch to a 5speed 1G.

As stated by Jeremy above.. I have messed with them a lot and have several local and non-local cars running modded EPROM TCUs, including Jason's 9 second street tire Auto in NC. The shift maps, shift pressures, etc, can be messed with by modifying the code and tables in the EPROM. Surprisingly it's a 256, double the size of a ECU chip, but it uses the same 28 pin configuration, thus the same size sockets and chips will work. It is awesome for driveability, if you don't want to manually shift all the time. And it's nice to go down the track without having to worry about shifting.
