Flames coming out of exuast.

What does it mean when you shoot flames out of your exuast when you shift or take it out of gear. I drove the car the other day and my friend who was driving behind me in his SI said he saw flames come out of my thermal. Is this bad or is it okay. I just dropped in a 20g @15 psi for now. I am just about to upgrade the fuel injectors with 625cc and a vr4 pump. I was thinking that the timing was off. How can I fix this. In the option videos from japan I see race cars like rx7s, skylines and supras do it all the time when they down shift around a corner. I was just wondering if it is good or bad.

My friends and I actualy tried to make this happen back when I was in high school. We were going to atach it to my 71 pickup truck. It had a natural rich condition so all we had to do was put a spark plug in the exhaust and we could get flame. Too bad that rich condition caused my cat to explode, lowing the exhaust manifold off the truck.

Usually flames mean you are running rich. If you let off the gas very abruptly, the ECU will se this as being very lean, and will dump a bunch of fuel into the motor. This fuel will sometimes pass through the motor unburnt, and ignite on the way out the exhaust.

Incomplete combustion in the chamber is one reason for this... not a problem though. The fuel is just continuing to burn once it is ourt of the combustion chamber. Since you dont have upgraded injectors, it could be due to an injector needle sticking causing one of the cylinders to run excessively rich. You may notice some blach deposits on your bumper .. this is due the the unburned fuel coming out of the exhaust. No worries though


..... oh yeah flames are cool.....

I went for a little drive to wash my car and my cousin said that he saw more flames come out of my tip when I launched off a red light. She takes off like normal with lots of boost at 3800 to 4000 to way past redlines. Its when i shift and let of the throttle and you cant really hear it but he says that it looks really cool in the dark because this was at night. It's not a really loud bang like a gunshot, more like a low pitched burp. It lasts quite long when I take a corner really fast and I am still in 2nd and I let go of the throttle and half way through the turn I go wot and the flames go away. Can this actually be bad for the valves? Do you guys think it will go away once I put in the injectors on friday? Does anyone else have this happen to their dsm?

thats cool as all hell. dont do anything to change it. you should have your friend take pics of the flames. that would be awesome:D

i have this problem on my 93 mitsi evolution one ,in mine its letting the blow off valve atmosphere , instead of being plumbed back after the air flow meter , this causes the airflow meter to dump more fuel and cause big(and i mean big!) flames i havnt had any problems to date,, but im guessing id be down on a little power due to being to rich!

DONT WORRY!!!
When I lived in poland, my cousin owned a lancer EVO IV.
One day he got a AUTRONIC MANIGMENT SYSTEM. we installed it and while he was driving i turned on te ANTI LAG system!!!
FUN!!!!!! this prevents lag by spitting A LOT OF GAS into the combustioon chamber while the car isn't in upper 50% of throttle. the muffler went bye bye ...

dont worry!!!

Even though flames are cool, if you're still running a cat then I think you should consider fixing the problem.Flames and backfire will definately shorten it's life.
The life of your turbo will suffer as well.
I would look at your BOV and see if its releasing too much air or leaking.
Also what's up with the 20G running 15psi?
Aren't you hitting fuel cut?
When I put in my 18G while waiting for my 550cc inj., I had to run .8bar(11.76psi) to keep from getting fuel cut.
Since 20G is a bigger turbo, I would imagine you'd have to run lower than that.If you are able to hit 15psi w/ 20G there could be a boost leak of some kind.

i have a Autronic on my 2g gsx 5spd
been trying to figure it out

i have been to autronics site, but no info on setting it up

The turbo is the Super 20g from HRC. It comes with a 15 psi actuator not an external wastegate. I am still waiting for my boost controller to come in. Before I started driving the car I put in my S-AFC to control the fuel a little bit. All stainless 3" down pipe and no cat mated with 3" thermal. At low end under 3500 hardly any boost until full spool at 3800 and that is when boost starts kickin till past red. Not planning on running more boost than that until I get my injectors and pump in. I have my spearco FMIC in but it's way too cold here in WI to install. Maybe next month.

To tell you the truth I don't remember, and my cousins friend set it up and showed us the basics!
DONT TURN THE ANTI LAG ON!!!!!!!
if you run w/ the anti lag on you will either blow the exhaust manny or kill the turbo~!
the exhaust man should be ported and the lancer turbo had roller bearings! also the turbo will last for around 1000 miles if you keep the anti lag on!

Try this i worked in my 90 crx. keep the car in gear while rolling and turn the car off, keep rolling in gear. pump the gase a few times and you should notice a different sound. then punch the gas one last time while turning the car back on. I used to get a nice flame to shoot out about 3 feet. just dont look at me if you blow somthing up :)

Is anyone getting flames WITH cats? I've never seen a car belch flames with a cat in place.

But yes, running rich with cats is definately a bad thing..


I've seen a couple of HUGE flames when I road race. 5ft long and high. Fast as lightning it disapears. You even see a tiny bit of smoke on top. :)
