My '91 makes the same noise. I've already replaced the pass. rear axle (which is where the noise is coming from) and it didn't fix the problem. I'm thinking that mine is in the exhaust, since it makes the noise whenever there is no throttle.

Why does my car seem to lean to the left?
They just do. Conjecture on this subject has been wide and varied for many years, but nobody has quite been able to finger the exact reason. The best theory thus far is that the lean is caused by the engine and driver being on the left-hand side. Nobody has complained thus far that it affects any part of the ride quality of the car, although a few people have commented that the right rear of the car tends to rattle a bit more. This may be because the lower left front tends to unload the right rear suspension slightly.

(Please note that this is the original unkillable thread, and not very interesting. Resist the temptation to reopen the question.)
Could this be the problem? I found this last night.

its hard to tell there is a scraped place on my exhaust right were the rear diff is i have an apexi ni exhaust,i tried tightning all the boltys back there ill give it a good drive later too see.your idea about the suspension never thought about that ill try swereving my car left to right on decelartion to see if it goes away by un loading the left shock and loading the right shock.thanks

have you checked your universal joints? Does it do it more when you coast on the intersate or highway? Sounds like a driveshaft out of balance to me. Could be a carrier bearing letting the driveshaft rattle around in it's mount.

At what speed was that recording made? mph...

it doesn't sound like its the exhaust hitting the drive shaft. I had this problem on my 2g with an apexi n-1, but it would only happen when i took a hard left on decel. then it would sound like taking a wodden stick and hitting the pipe. very loud. i just readjusted the 2nd from the rear bracket and its fine now.
