Head and timing belt replacement, car won't start....

My timing belt broke, and bent valves, so I replaced the head with a working one, along with the timing belt, and balance shaft belt. All put together, and now the car won't start. I marked everything I took off with masking tape and a marker, then took the tape off when it was reconnected, and I checked the engine over again, but everything appears to be hooked up.

The car's making a weird noise when I try to start it, sorta like a "chuff" noise, like when you exhale air really quickly. It's doing this every few seconds, but at random times. When it's not making that noise, it's making a "rrrrrrrrrr" noise everytime the engine 'turns over'.

I'm beat after working on the car all day in the snow/rain/sleet, so any ideas you guys can give me when I look at it tomorrow morning would really help me out.

hows your ignition timing after putting everything back on..it could be a timing issue not being TDC check all your timing marks and make sure they are correct

I would say you didnt do the timing belt installation correctly, you can mess it up sometimes and think your dead on, trust me i work with the techs at Leith Mitsu Motors, the Shop Director tells me he checks the timing belt marks with his special tools for that purpose at least three times before he starts the vehicle.

Thanks for the replies fellas, I haven't had internet access since Friday...

To answer some of the questions posted...Yes, the plugs are in there, haven't looked anything over yet since attempting to start it Thursday night, but I've done a few timing belt jobs and I was sure all the marks lined up. It took me awhile, cause the crank would be off a tooth after rotating the engine, but I got it finally, but that's something I'll be checking. Brand new OEM head gasket, so that should be fine, but I'll check for boost leaks once it stops raining up here. Hope it's something simple and i can get her running again.

I checked the timing this afternoon, and everything's dead on....exhaust cam, intake cam both line up perfectly, with dowel pins straight up, oil pump sprocket and crank sprocket all line up also. I rechecked the tension, and it's correct doing the 'drill bit' method. The puffing sound stopped once I put the injector insulator on cylinder 3, must've fallen out when I was putting the fuel rail back on.

I'm stumped, and if I can't figure this out by Thursday, I'm going to have to sell the car non-running since I can't drive it home. Please help me!!!
