Okay guys it is starting to get pretty cold in the mornings here and I realized that my heater is not working like it used to. It used to get freaking hot. I can let the car warm up and the temp gauge will be halfway--its normal position. When I turn on the heat it is warm at first but then get cooler to the point where it is slightly warm. At the same time the temp gauge falls back to the first quarter measure near the C(cold) mark. What in the world is going on? I am thinking it is the thermostat so I am changing it but if there is any other possiblities let me know. Thanks.

As it gets colder out your engine won't be able to stay as hot with the heater on. Thats why people put a small peice of cardboard in front of their radiator in the winter. Your problem sounds normal to me because it does heat up to where it is supposed to.

Yeah the car is heating up fine but the climate heater isn't. That was the question. Why is it not heating up the cabin? When I turn it on it causes the temp gauge to drop and I can't feel any hot air...just air blowing out. Also the A/C works just fine. Damn I can't stand this freezing my tail off.

Are the coolant lines that go to your heater core warm? If not then you might have a restriction in you lines or the water pump could be going out but I would check the lines first. There is also a vaccum operated door that moves when you move the controls for the heater/AC. You should hear a soft, low thud sound if it's working right.

I'll have to check that. If the water pump was going out then the car would run hot wouldn't it? If so that is not the case.

I was involved in a thread about this before, it turned up to be what you said. The thermostat.

When you put the heat on, you are cooling the coolant causing the gauge to drop. Since the thermostat is open(most likely), the car isn't able to retain heat because what it is making is used to try and heat you.

OK I thought about this some more and now I'm almost positive that your blend door isn't moving because of what you said

I would make sure you can hear it moving and then check to make sure nothing is blocking it from moving like a pin/pencil. It is part of your heater core box.
Your blend door is what I'm talking about below.

If the gauge is moving the heat is being used...

If it was the blender, the gauge would not change.

Is that true? I thought it was all mechanical when the sliders are moved.
I know my jeep has a motor for the blender that is dead and it only puts out hot air.

Thanks

Which knob controls the blend door? The one that actually adjusts the temp? How do I fix it. I do need to redo the dash. I took it off when I painted it and reinstalled it wrong somehow. The knob that controls the airflow(face, feet, defrost, etc) will not go all the way to the totally face icon so it is blowing partially on my face but also some on the feet. However this should not affect anything because air is still getting in. Let me know where the blend door thingy is and I will check it. However I have bought a termostat and forgot to pick up antifreeze...doh! Anyone know if 1g's uses the green or orange antifreeze? Also what brand is the best and how much will I need?

Green.

Green. I use whatever's cheapest, but I don't live where it's freezing cold, so I can't recommend the best brand.

It is probably just the heater core is a lil clogged, thats what happens to mine. I just drained the coolent, unpluged the two tubes that go into the heater core, put a hose up to one of them and a bunch of junk came out of the other one lol. That worked for me.

When my friend's heater didn't work...... his head gasket was in need of replacement. Of course his car would overheat too. :D

Do the lines to the heater core get hot? If they don't take both of them off and flush the heater core with a garden hose.
On DSMs I can't remember if the blend door is vaccum or electriclly operated. My DSM has a blown motor so I can't test it on my car. :( It is controled by the temp knob. I can tell you that the door is on the box that the heater core is in.
Use green antifreeze, the red stuff will gel up if it's mixed with the green. I use the cheap stuff to but Preston is supposed to be good.

Well guys it turned out to be the thermostat. We changed it today and when I took it out it was busted. One end had cracked open making it stay open allowing the coolant to run through. This also turned out to be the problem with my idle. The car was staying in cold mode so it ran crappy. Changed the thermostat and the heater is so hot I had to turn it down. The idle works great and the car runs like a champ. So if you guys have idle problems and can't figure it out check that thermostat.
