How much hp can the stock tranny hold?

Hey guys. My friend is planning on making around 500+hp. He want to know if the stock tranny will hold up. This is a 95 GS-T with a 6-bolt 56-trim GT40/T350 (from agp). If 500hp is too much power, which parts should be changed to handle the power?

Lets keep this post about the tranny not whether or not he can make that much power. Thanks! :D

being a GST he has an edge on us AWDs...he has wheel spin working for his tranny. but anyway you cut it that is a lot of power and the tranny may hold it for a bit but probably not for a long time, but all you can do is try. after it does break send it to shep and have him work his magic on it.

I think it also depends on how old the tranny is. The old one (if it's in good shape of course) could take more than the brand new one. It's attributed to the old parts being "work hardened" if you will. It is not day and night difference but noticeable.

He's doing an auto to manual tranny swap soon.. so we don't know how many miles are on the tranny yet since he hasn't picked one up just yet. hehe. So you guys think he should be fine until it breaks.. then take it from there? We're thinking about building it to overkill before hand if it's not too expensive.

Shifting like an old lady while racing, hell be fine, if he is banging gears with that much power, watchout! :)
Exactly, one of my friends that has put down 250 whp went through 3 transmission in 5 months because he is constanty beating the hell out of his trans. Yet another local guy is in the 400 whp range and has had the same trans for the last year and a half because he doesnt bang through the gears constantly.

P.S. Ikickuintheballl hit me with a pm, I am probably not gonna be doing my 5 speed trans swap anymore. hint hint, lol.
