How much shaft Play is good?

I'm not really sure if its good to have a little shaft play on my T-28, but i can barely move the shaft up and down.. just a little.. is that normal is that bad? could that be the reason why my t-28 won't hold boost to redline anymore?? just a little shaft play will mess up my turbo?? and won't allow my boost to hold to redline anymore??

side to side shaftplay should be minimal. As long as it doesn't scrape the sides of the housing you are fine. The shaft play you should be concerned with is in and out. Grab ahold of the nut and try and pull on it. In and out play is BAD. that should be zero.
