hey, i've been looking through all the forums and i have not seen anything about starters and selenoids and why my car won't start.
right now, i'll jump in, hit the key and all the normal things happen, fuel pump kicks on, lights go on, gauges do what they are sopposed to do. everything is good except the car doesn't turn over. its as if the battery is dead but accually isn't.
also, we push started it to get it home, and once it was running we hit the key to see if it would make that wonderfull grind noise and there was nothing. does this mean my starter is dead???? any help would be great, i miss my dsm.

1st either check the battery with a multimeter or swap in a known working battery to rule that out. Next pull the starter and hook it up to on of those jump boxes to see if its good, if it is try changing the relay and if that doesn't work start checking fuses.... Thats where I am now, so don't fell to bad

i have the same problem with my gst. I change the starter and it still wont turn on. I need help too. Where is the fuse or relay located???? When i try to turn it on all it does is drain my battery and all i hear is clicking noises coming from the starter but it wont start
from what I've researched, it's a common problem on 2G's. I could never figure out what was wrong, even with new battery, starter, whatever. I just installed a pushbutton starter wired directly to the solenoid.

really?? i had the battery tray out, along with the upper ic pipe, and was looking down in there, and figured i would have to have some tiny hands to get down in there.
i figured i'd have to go in from the bottom some how. but if its done from the top, and with in an hour then thats sounds good to me, i'll just have to take another look i guess. thanks

 ok, so i went out side with a buddy to push my car over to were we are going to work on it, and i jumped in, and tryed to start it and it started no problem. no CEL's, no hesitation. it sat for probably 3 to 4 days. before i tryed it.
its done this before but i want to get this fixed so i do not get stranded someplace standing there with my finger up my butt waiting for a ride.
anyone have any ideas. did my starter just get stuck and it loosened after sitting???? or was it somthing that possibly overheated if that could even happen???? really confused and running low on patience. someone help please

Checking the terminals is a good idea. I have had similar symptoms before and it was bad battery terminals and dirty cables. For some reason the accessories would work find but the starter would not kick over.

There could also be a dead spot in the starter. Sometimes they get a bad spot coil and if you stop in that spot it wont start. As soon as you pop start the car or get the starter past that spot it is ok.

I'm having similar problems with my 1990 at the moment. When I go to start her up sometimes she'll fire first try others it won't do anything. Electrical will turn on, gauges do their thing, etc, etc. I have to just sit there and keep turning the key. Eventually something will catch, stars and planets align, and she'll start (sometimes reluctantly which a little bit of the gas pedal helps).
Things I've replaced:
Battery
Battery terminals
Spark plugs & wires
Coil pack
Transistor
Starter (new mitsu)
Alternator
Also I checked the ECU and the caps look fine (looked to have been replaced already). Also found out I have an Eprom ECU! DSMlink here I come!!! :D
When I go to start the car I hear only one click coming from the center console which makes me think that the MPI relay is okay. I'm really starting to beat my head against a wall here. My mechanic thought it was a bad starter at first (rebuilt) and we went through several of those and then switched to a new mitsu. Then the problem started again. So now I'm exploring other options. My next step is to replace the starter relay and negative (possibly positive also) battery cables and go from there. Where is the starter relay located in my 1990? I've heard it is either with the ECU in the center console or under the dash by the pedals. Also is the starter relay a mitsu only part or is it something I can or should get at a parts store (Autozone)? Also if its mitsu (recommended or) only what's the part number? Sorry for such a long post, but I'm almost at my wits end and need help!

im having a similar problem with my 97 GS-T. Sometimes it fires up just fine, especially when the engine is warm. other times it will start turning over and then stop for a split second and then keep turning till it fires. almost feels like a tooth might be missing on the starter. One time it wouldnt turn over at all, it would just click, so i popped the hood and wiggled the terminal clamps and she fired up fine. Bought a new negative terminal clamp yesterday, hopefully thats all the problem is.

Does anyone have any info on the starter relay? Where its located in a 1990? Where I can get a new one? Mitsu? Parts store? Part #? How much? Any other ideas on what's causing my problems? I plan on replacing the starter relay(info above would be great), and negative battery cable/s and seeing how it does after that. If I still have problems I'll start checking the wiring/wiring harness going to the starter. This problem is soooo frustrating! If I could get this problem figured out I think my car would be doing alright.

come on guys! nobody has any kind of info for me? greenstreak? i was really hoping to work on getting this problem resolved this weekend, but i'm in need of a little more info. starter relay location, where to buy a new one, etc from previous post. i need your help guys. thanks in advance.

also isn't the starter solenoid part of buying a new starter? possible problem suggested by last post.

I believe the starter relay is up behind the radio near the ecu (in front of and behind the radio.) and have you checked the battery cables for a very secure connection? I had problems years ago where the car would get radio, lights, chime, etc but when I would turn the key I got nothing. New negative battery cable and all has been fine.

If you want to pick up a relay PM me and I can get you a price on one from Mitsu.

dreaminskyline,
I was wondering which battery cables you replaced on your car. I looked under the hood today and there are two main negative battery cables. One of them is about six inches long and goes directly to the firewall. The other is wrapped up in the wiring harness and appears to go to the tranmission. I didn't unwrap the wires to find out exactly where it goes, but I'm 90% sure it goes to the trans. Which one of these negative battery cables did you replace? Or did you replace both? When I inspected the negative battery cables both seemed to be okay. They didn't look old/frayed/damaged/etc. My battery terminals are new and very secure. Also on another starter related thread someone mentioned the clutch safety switch. I know that my mechanic bypassed the clutch safety switch for some reason. I can't remember why. Could this be part of my problem? If this is what's causing my problem I'm going to be soooo mad!

I know a lot of the 2g guys bypass the clutch safety switch to possibly lower their chance of crankwalk. I.E. Less use of clutch and thrust bearing, etc. I wonder if any of the 2g guys have problems after doing this to the switch. I sure hope its not the clutch switch. I'm hoping to get this issue solved on my own without having to take it back to my mechanic.

Greenstreak-
I pm'd you about the starter relay and other parts I'm interested in.
