Well, back from the dead with this thread.

I have had things going on with the car and with life in general so I haven't been using the Propane now for months. It is time to start playing again though.

The one thing I was never happy with was the part throttle bog that I would get when I would not use enough throttle to kick the AFC into the high map but it would be enough to build boost and start the propane injection. This resulted in bogging everytime. Solution...possibly......wire the propane solenoid to the TPS instead of to a Hobb's switch. A local guy is actually doing this and he said it works great. It only starts injecting at 100% throttle.

Now that I plan on playing with this again I am hoping to update the thread with results. I had originally planned on taking it to the dyno and getting some numbers but the dyno place that I was going too stopped doing AWD conversions. =(

BTW the local guy with a GVR4 is running 27# on a L2R with less than 5 counts of knock.

Sorry eric, what i meant was, instead of using your TPS to change throttle position on the AFC, use the hobbs switch to control the AFC. Just run a wire from the propane relay to the TPS input on the AFC. Then everytime the propane turns on it will send 12 volts to the afc which will then read 100% throttle, and switch to high settings. Didnt mean to confuse anyone, I hope this makes sense.

*i've read the whole thread;)

ok, must the tank be mounted straight up? we have propane forklifts at my work and the tanks are sideways. they run off about 30lb tanks at least. they are about twice as big as bbq tanks and heavy as shit when ya gotta drag the fulls ones to the cage outside. anyway, we dont use blankets or bottle warmers or do anything to the tanks in storage, before we put them on the forklift or even starting them up. the tanks survive temps from 20-25* in the winter to at least 100* in the summer. and while swappin tanks, many times the valves get stuck open and liquid propane (lp) comes out and instantly boils. its boils at -44*F so that means the gas hitting the ic lines has to be pretty close to that. so i think that one temperature expirement was not done correctly or something. a true temp test would be to place probes at the outlet on the ic and one on the tb elbow and spray the propane in the middle.

anyway i just wanted to add my propane knowledge about whether they needed to be temp. controlled or not.

i plan on purchasing this kit once i get my awd running decently. another question, could the hobbs switch also activate WI or something?

yea nate pharr is pretty cool, i've hung out with him a couple times. walkin dsm parts catalog right there. lol

The way the tank is mounted is a function of the tank design. A Vertical tank must be mounted vertical. As your BBQ tank is, they HAVE to be mounted upright. They do make horizontal mounting tanks.

Just a little update. The propane is back in the car again and I spent a good hour tuning today. I must say, I am impressed all over again with this setup.

I started the day at 20# on 93 octane pump gas. O2 voltage was a steady .94v across the board with timing dropping to 9* (eww) and rising to only 15* at redline. With this tune the car ran a 12.7 @110. Not too bad I guess.

Went out this morning with the propane at 80# and the valve open one full turn. First pull the O2's rose to about .98 and the car bogged and stuttered. Over the course of 6 pulls I have the O2s at .90 and timing drops to a low of 14* now and rises to 22* by redline. The car absolutely came alive.

For the next few pulls I bumped the boost to 22# which is dropping to 20ish anyway at redline. The numbers and timing dropping to 14* and still rising to 20-21* and O2s still hovering in the .90-.92 area. Now we are talking. :D

As the car sits I have for the first time ever spun my tires into second gear. :D

Very Nice! Good to see you getting her dailed in.

I too hit my own record. Full weight VR4 on pump 93 octane and propane I ran 11.31 @122mph (rev limiter in 3rd hits at 122 before the last lights which screws us)

Propane rules. Ive been running 30# on pump for the last 3 weeks constantly, with no knock below 6200 rpms, then about 5-10 counts above that due to like 24* at 6k. Backing off the base timing solves this, but gives me a crappy idle. But the vac hose came of the fpr and kaboom, piston soup. :D

chris: 11.3 on pump gas is awesome, congrats
