New turbo sounds funny?!?!? Normal?

So while my turbo is getting rebuilt, I decided to buy a big 16g for tempary use. I ordered it from extremepsi, got an install kit and everything I needed. My intake was a 4" so I had to use my stocker no big deal.
Get is all hooked up and take her for a ride, and the turbo sounds like a damn supercharger. It whines really loud, it also sounds electronic. I don't get it.
I took it by a friend that has a big 16g and had him look and he was baffled too. I borrowed his intake pipe just to see if that was the problem and it still sounded exactly the same. Pulled the intake off and the turbo spins freely, no shaft play (it better not, only has like 20miles on it)
Any ideas?

Someone told me it could be the manifold that makes the turbo sound different, but I'm running a sbr one, which is similar to stock, so I don't think that is it.

Mine whined like a supercharger right before it died. All i can say that it's not good so i would give them a call back and let them know. They're probably going to play dumb and act like it's ur fault if it "DID" go bad and probably starved it of oil.

Good Luck, Hope you figure it out and get it handled.

My 16g started sounding like that...

I thought it was a blown turbo, but like everyone else said, it was just a big air leak...There was a gap b/w my FMIC upper pipe and the TB and everytime I went into boost, my supercharger kicked in ;)

Just try another leak test and spray soapy water all over every connection, it may be some where you didn't think...

I doubt your turbo is blown...Altho, just curious, but aren't you supposed to 'break in' a new turbo...As in no boost

I didn't do a boost leak test with this turbo on, but all I changed was 1 pipe, so maybe it's leaking where it bolts to the turbo or where it meets up w/ the other pipe. The other side of the car i know for sure there are no leaks.
Yeah, this is how I'm going to break my turbo in; 18psi at WOT

Ha, whatever works man...

Ya, the J pipe I sold you, make sure theres a gasket where it mates to the turbo, and if not, use a good amount of RTV...You always want a proper seal there

+1...Mine made the same crazy supercharger noises before she blew...Then when it finally did go south I had the 007 smoke screen behind the car all the way home...no good

Actually, that J pipe didn't work for me, so I had to get a third one. lol The first one I bought was in the install kit then yours then I got one from punishment. The one you sold me hit the upper radiator hose.
Oh man I apologize, just realized 2g/1g differences altho I figured they all used the same J pipe...Sorry, good luck with your problem

Same thing here, right before my 14b died it make loud winding sounds, like a supercharger...

Good luck, I got my e16g from extremepsi and it doesn’t make any weird sounds, so sounds like something not good is happening. After installing the turbo did you allow the car to crank over at all to get some oil circulating through?

edit: Never mind on that last question, I diddn't read enough :p

As far as priming the turbo goes your best bet is to take out the fuse for the ignition. This will alow everything to work without starting the car so there is no exhaust so the turbo can prime itself.

But concerning your whining are any of your fins bent. My little 14b had compressor surge at one point or another and it bent a fin causing it to whine.

Because you over boost the turbo due to leaks (ie overspin the turbo) I dont understand why you dont just boost leak test it and fix it.. Is it really that f'in hard?:wall:
Probably because I dont have a fucking tester that size. The only one I have is for a 4" opening like my other turbo had.
Thanks for the attitude
