Would the old school type AFC work decently for tuning on a Big16g with the supporting fuel mods? I don't have a lot of funding, and this would hold me over until I could afford DSMlink...

Yes it does. I still use it in my B16G equipped car.

As far as tuning, I unfortunately do not have any type of datalogger at this time...
Can I tune without or is it a must? And would you suggest an EGT gauge, pocketlogger, or both?
And is there some standard value I could use for my setup or are all cars different? i.e. Big16g w/550's and stock SMIC...

get an egt and pocketlogger. best way to tune other than dsmlink and the big programs like the AEM and greddy standalones.
