Power/Economy button ??'s

Okay, I was driving to the gym yesterday, and I've had my pwr/eco button on power for the last couple months. I put it on economy, and it seemed that it was doing more for high speeds. I got to 80 like nothing, where as with the button on power, it takes a bit longer, but definitely accelerates better from zero, and shifts harder, into a seemingly much higher gear when I step on it.

@ What exactly does the power/economy button do?? Mechanics of it I mean...what exactly happens when you push the button?

@Does one or the other help for a certain area of car performance? ie. Does economy help with top speed, whereas power helps with bottom end??

i dont think so, I always thought that economy mode on automatics was just to save gas. Like the ecu gave lower shift points. And on "power" it gave higher shift points. Then again.. i have never even been in an automatic dsm...

the pwr/eco button connects into the harness that goes to the automatic tranny control computer. When it's in the eco position it will use a shift map which supposedly "maximizes fuel economy" as much as possible for an A/T car.

the pwr setting will switch the A/T computer to a different shift map with more tolerance and allows for the car to stay in gear longer for more torque.

you'll notice in the pwr setting your car will drive harder and shift more aggressively.

Just a though. ..If you want the most power try using the power mode and switch the overdrive off. I don't recomend driving on the highway with overdrive off though as the engine will rev very high and highrevs at long distances isn't good for the engine. If you notice, when you use the different settings, of Economy and Power, your throttle responds differently. With both of these set for maxximum performance this setting gets the most power and throttle response out of the car.

Thanks Saturday, I'll try that out...I haven't really driven at all with OD off, I just kinda forget about it to be honest. Next time I'm at a stop sign and the roads are dry, I'll try launching with power switch on and OD off...I'll tell you if I notice a difference:)

Most people tend to forget it's there and most auto's that I've seen seem to have the overdrive in a very awkward place on or under the console and to be honest, most people I know don't even know it exists in there cars.

My Eclipse is an auto as well and I love where the OD button is. But if I had a choice I'd love a five speed. I got this car for a great deal a few years ago so I'm not really complaining. I'm sure you will love the newfound throttle response you will have. It will feel much tighter then before.

Edit: Where you will find the most performance gains is from a roll. The throttle will be almost instantaneous.

where is your OD switch located?
i installed a custom billet shifter for my AT and have to relocate my switch.

also, for the tech guys reading.
my OD switch has 2 positions. on/off, and it is not lighted. any reason why there is three wires going to it?

I've wanted to rid myself of the "horsecock" shifter for a while, but I guess it's not that bad. It's comfortable as a handrest, and the OD button is placed quite nicely. I would love to have a 5 speed, I know that with a 5 speed and a good clutch, my car would be substantially quicker, but oh well. Like I've posted a million times, as soon as my tranny or engine dies, I'm swapping both out for a 5 speed and a 4g63T. THEN I'll have some fun:D As soon as I get out of detention today after school, I'll turn off the OD and leave it on "power" Maybe that will be my city-driving setup for the rest of my car's life with an a/t.

saturday, once again, on my way home from the gym on the twisties of Carrolltown...I tried the OD off/Power On, and DAMN! Twice the throttle response, it's like it's in 2nd gear constantly, but only going much faster. I passed this guy in a '02 camry around one of the sharper turns, not too bright, considering the roads were shitty, but it was so easy...thanks for the replies guys:) And, from a standstill, it's quicker.:D

haha! :D I'm glad I could help. Enjoy the new found power! :D

Well in stock form it should be right on the drivers side of the automatic shift lever. You will know it's on when the OD light in the speedometer is light up in the lower right. ;)
