It's ok to run a couple 1/4 mile but I don't think you want to do this long term

because now the hot exhaust gas are exiting right under your fuel tank, 10 gallons of premium gasoline that you can be heating up on the highway.

Just take off the whole downpipe.

 

Yeah remove the entire exhaust and just let it vent from your O2 housing. I know a few ppl that are doing that while they wait for their 3" full exhausts to get in. It's not exactly legal or earth friendly but the big ass diesel trucks are f*cking it up worse than us anyway.

 

I just got my exhaust done. 3 in catback with no muffler, it opens about 2in to the left (looking from rear) of the rear tire. Yeah its loud but not as loud as a SS slowmaro at wot imho. Plus dynoed the gain....35hp to the wheels oh yeah

 

Has anyone tried cutting off the stock muffler from stock system and add a pipe extension and bolt on a big 4-5inch tip to clear rear bumper(as if a complete aftermarket system wa put on)??? I wonder if i could get a little gain in HP by doing it??

 

For the time and effort you'd be better off getting a true exhuast.

My question from above leads me to this one.
Do you guys think there is any HP gain by removing the stock 2G muffler from the stock exhaust? The reason I'm asking is better Drag Strip #'s and a free mod in one. Removing my muffler in any case would be only temporary of course.

Nope

Usually removing a stock muffler will get you nada for HP gains. I mean just adding a cat back without a downpipe doesn't really add that much, and a muffler is a small part of the exhaust. Id say maybe 5 hp at peak boost, which equates to basically jack for the work involed.

but if you have a high flow downpipe/header and high flow cat/race pipe.... wouldnt replacing the stock muffler with a straight pipe make alot of difference?...sort of like taking the cork out of a bottle

Of course if everything else is upgraded getting rid of the stock muffler will help. I think he was tlaking about takin the stock muffler off the stick system,

ohh ok, thats what i thought..
see i have car insurance due soon, so i dont have the cash for a nice cat-back... so im either going to run straight out the back with an extension... or buy this straight-through dynomax ultra-flo muffler i found for $18.. till i can get a better system.

Does anyone know about how much it would cost to have a muffler shop make a mandrel bent copy of the stock exhaust in 2.5 in pipe? I would rather do this and use a universal N1 muffler than pay a ton of $ for a name brand.

 

Leave full exhaust on till a replacement is bought/made. If downpipe is removed and exhaust gases vented from O2 housing... 1500 F heat will hit the oil pan... Try to keep the oil cool and the pan in one piece.

 

Those looking for a cheaper solution to the typical exhauasts should check out AHP. I have a turbo back on order from them that cost me $650 shipped. That's a 2.5" O2 pipe, 2.5" DP, and 3" catback. I already have the 2.5" test pipe ($40). When I get it I'll have to give a little review to let you guys know how it is. The nice part is that its all custom made. You choose the pipes, the muffler, and the tip and they put it together. So you can get an affordable, "all go, no show" system (my tip is a 3" piece of pipe welded to the muffler ) or pay more for the shiny mufflers and tips.
