Hello. I have a 92 Talon 2.0 NT with a just blown head gasket. It was burnt in half between 2 cylinders and I only had 30 pounds of compression in these 2 cylinders. What my question is...what kind of damage should I look for other than a warped head (I didnt let the temp gauge get in the red zone) and what else should I replace while I'm in this far and how could I clean the pistons (they look like they've got some carbon built up on top of them) without taking apart the bottom end? I'm also going to change oil pans and probably replace the oil pump while I'm there too. Thanks for any help.

it should be just a possibly warped head. As fas as cleaning pistons I can help you there cause I JUST did it....Just use some engine degreaser (or just plain degreaser-I got the castrol super clean at NAPA), and a brush, and a wet rag to wipe of the old cleaner. Make SURE you block off your oil/coolant holes on the head. Have fun pulling that head...I was just there a month ago. Good Luck...

I'm getting .007 on the flatness of the head, I believe service limit is .008. Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to have it re-worked would it?? Also, I get no more than .003 of flatness around each cylinder which is not bad at all. The head gasket that was in there was black and it said rock gasket on it...is this the stock gasket or aftermarket? Should I put this same type of gasket back in or what??? I've got to order the gaskets still to please let me know and where to order it from. I think I'm gonna order a total gasket kit from FFWD and a set of ARP head studs unless the stock ones will be ok. Please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

Resurfacing the head won't hurt. Use only original Mitsu gaskets (especially the headgasket) and seals, no cheap PepBoys or Mr. Gasket junk. Call Conicelli ( www.partznet.com ) about the oil pump and get the Mitsu gasket kit from FFWD. Since the kit comes with the valve seals, you might replace them as well - while you have the head off. Good luck.

I just did the same job that your doing now. If you are doing all the work yourself when you take the head to get resurfaced just tell them to "rebuild" the whole thing. They will pressure test it and clean it all up, put in new valve guides and seals. It was $160 for me. I have a 1.8 so yeah theres less work but i dont think that it would all that much more for a 2.0 head. The thing came back looking like brand new inside and out. Also while your waiting for that to come back you can clean up the rest of the stuff in the engine bay. I had a few days so my whole intake manifold looks new inside and out.. I scrubed the shit out of it with some wire brushes and some nylon pads (basically the same thing as steel wool, home depot/ plumbers section.. works great) Good luck.
