I just bought a 97 GS-T spyder.. the check engine light is on.. I asked the folks and they said the DEALER said that since they replaced the plugs and wires its changed things *SLIGHTLY*.. enough to make the ecu go "whA?" and this the light, and that the ECU needs to be reset..

since this is my first DSM in am limited in my knowledge..

any thoughts?

Yeah, definately get the code. I am really sceptical that plug wires and plugs would make you check engine light come on. Don't always trust the dealer. I hate when mine comes on. The dealer wants $45 just to check the code. Then i always get bullshit explinations for it like i need a $300 injector flush, etc. If you plan on doing thing yourself, or even saving money, get a factory service manual. You can just look up the code and it will tell you how to trouble shoot it. Also, like someone said above, just disconnect the battery to reset the code.

For resetting the ecu, you can unplug the battery, or you can remove one of the fuses for about a minute(I forget which fuse sorry).
MPI fuse.

so, is there a certin procedure to follow after resetting? will the car drive funky for a while.. my truck always ran a tough rough for an hour or so as the computer re-learned everything (best mix/timing.etc).. will this occur with the car?
I reset my gvr4 to attempt to see if knock detection was the reason I was only boosting 8psi, and the only difference after the reset was an improperly set clock. Well, the check engine light went off, and stayed off, so I'm assuming that it had indeed detected knock previously. But turns out my wastegate was bad as well.

Yes, you'll lose the timing curve, etc. and the ECU needs to re-learn (the idle might suck for a while as well)..

well, what I emtnis, do i start it and let it idle for x-min? with my truck you were supposed to start it.. let it idel for the min, then rev it to 4500rpm slowly 3 times, then turn it off.. at least thats what the dealer said... but from what I gather here, just reset and drive normally to let the computer get into its groove eh?

You might want to reset the ISC motor by grounding #10 terminal of the diagnostic connector (ground the terminal, start the engine and adjust the idle with the BISS screw, kill the engine, turn the ignition OFF, remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic terminal, start the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes), then just drive it as you normally do.. :)
