Hey guys, I just just picked up a 91 RT/TT and have a few little bugs that I need to get a handle on, and some quesitons. My car has the ECS and the dual-mode exhaust. I was able to get the exhaust working, but the switch itself is broken. Not shorted or anything, just physically broken - the clip that holds the rocker on the switch falls off if the exhaust is set in "tour" mode. Anyone know a source for a replacement switch?

Also, some of my gauges are messed up. I suspect the sender in the oil pressure gauge is at fault, since sometimes it will randomly jump off the top of the scale but the rest of the time won't move off the bottom of the gauge. Also the fuel gauge doesn't seem to have any idea what's going on. I pump in 15 gallons, it thinks I have a quarter tank. Cruising down the highway it jumps to almost a half, then drops to an 8th in just a couple of miles. So for now, I'm driving by odometer. How hard are the senders on these 2 gauges/senders to diagnose on the S/3K? Are they the same as the 1G DSM?

The last question may be a "stupid newbie" one, but how noticable is the ECS supposed to be? It appears to be functioning - the indicatos switches from sport to tour like it should, and you can hear the actuators turn if the engine is off when you switch it, but I can't seem to see any difference in performance under load - cornering, braking, etc - and can't feel any difference cruising on the highway either.

Also, more a curiousity question than anything - how hard is it to replace the gauges in the 3 center pods with aftermarket gauges? I've seen pics online with Westach gauges fitted in there - is there an actual gauge cup socket back there, or another panel like the dash cluster? Car has no aftermarket instrumentation, so I was thinking of adding some there if it's practical, replacing the "dud" boost gauge and oil pressure gauges with Nordskag or Westach gauges.

- RE active exhaust switch: try user mykiss69 (I think?) on the 3Si for sale forums. He parts out a ton of cars & should have what you're looking for. The Active Exhaust and Rear Wiper switches are one combined unit IIRC.

- RE gauge senders: Same deal as DSM. On an AWD 3S, the fuel pump access cover is under the spare tire... same deal as 1G AWD DSM. The oil pressure sender is below the rear turbo toward the bottom of the block, IIRC. I'd check the wiring out, then do some testing on the senders before replacing them.

- RE replacing stock center gauges with aftermarket: It's a pain in the ass but can be done. The 3 stock gauges are a cluster unit, it's not a pod like aftermarket gauges would use. But there are a few different ways to attack putting aftermarket gauges in. 60mm gauges fit the holes exactly once all the stock crap is removed, but they don't end up recessed back into the dash like the stock gauges. I saw a nice 52mm setup where the guy used part of the stock cluster to hold the aftermarket gauges in. Looked pretty good.

I plan on doing Defi D-gauges (52mm) on mine. Should match the stock main cluster nicely.

To get the stock gauges out, you'll probably end up pulling the dashboard out. It's not as bad as it sounds, figure on a full weekend project if you work slow and have some beer. While you have the dash out, you can replace your defroster vents if they're all cracked to hell (you have to have the dash out to replace them).

- RE ECS: On mine it's pretty noticable on bumpy roads. You may not notice a big difference in "performance" handling between the two modes, because even in TOUR mode, ECS automagically switches into SPORT (without changing the indicator light) under certain conditions (such as heavy accel or braking, or sharp steering input). So you're getting SPORT mode in those "performance" conditions whether you like it or not. The rest of the time (say, driving in a straight line at constant speed) you should be able to tell a difference in shock compression when driving over regular bumps in the road, etc. In SPORT mode you'll feel everything, while in TOUR mode it's a bit softer.

Hope that helps... otherwise, at the very least I made everyone else think I was working due to all the typing. ;) BTW congrats on the new car!

Will do! I still need to see you about the pumps we discussed as well. I'm getting more comfortable with the new car, and now am sure it can handle the trip up there but I may want tires on it first.

And thanks for all the info James, you're a lifesaver. I had no idea where that oil sender was, at all! And you've pretty much killed the idea of replacing the center gauges - I'm not too into the idea of cutting up anything I can't reverse pretty easily. It does need the defroster vent caps replaced, eventually, so maybe then. Still can't figure out if the suspension is working or has defaulted to sport mode all the time. First order of business though, is the damned AC compressor just failed, and we're already over 100 degrees out here. :( Oh well.

Yeah Rick, but not too many people know that. I'm keeping it kinda quiet till I get some bugs worked out. It's definately not ready to be brought out till I get it up to speed, and some cosmetic things fixed.

i thought you were not going to tell people about this but no you had to tell every body on the net didn't you.

j/k monty hope you get the bugs out
