Sound when depressing clutch pedal

I'll come to a stop at a red light. When the light turns green, I push the clutch in, put it in first, and give it gas. As I begin to depress the clutch pedal and give it more gas, I hear a knocking noise that sounds like its coming from right in front of me in the engine bay. This happens if I take off in first and/or second.

As soon as the clutch is fully depressed and I'm driving along, the knocking sound is gone. It only happens when I'm taking off from a stop.

Suspension parts need to be greased? TO bearing?

I will see about dropping the tranny and checking for anything that could have come loose.

Is there anything else I could try to narrow down the cause of the sound?

See if the noise is there even when you disengage/engage the clutch in neutral while the car isn't moving. If the noise is there only when the car begins to move, check your CV joints as well (prior to dropping the tranny). If the cage of the CV joint is cracked, it's going to be easier to induce the noise when the wheels are turned. If the axles and the clutch are OK, you might also have damaged the differential (cracked spider gears). When you drop the tranny, check the input shaft seal for leaks and the input shaft for excessive play (= busted bearing).
