Explain to me what a Test Pipe is please.

Ok, let's start at the muffler. Follow the pipe to the center of the car, and you come to the cat. converter. The pipe that attaches the cat to the down pipe is the test pipe.

Test pipe: a piece of pipe that you can buy or make that you replace the catalytic converter with. this isnt legal for public highway use, but some places dont have emissions testings. it makes for a very nice power gain.

the pipe directly behind the catalytic converter (towards the engine) IS the downpipe.

Yep! The test pipe is what takes the place of the cat in the exhaust system. It is a great advantage due to the great loss in back pressure. Instead of exhaust gasses having to go through the cat (Some of which are quite curvy) and build more back pressure, they simply go straight through and out the muff. (I said muff) Its nice when your like me (duh) and live in Minnesota. We have no emissions testing anymore. They quit doing the testing right about the time I bought my first DSM...lucky me!

As I'm reading through this guys mods and reading his reply, something isn't adding up ! Says he has a Buschur 2.5 cat back system with no cat? Hmmmmmm.

OK for everyone that this guy just totally confused, A test pipe or a "Straight" pipe is a piece of piping cut the length of the original catalytic converter. It directly replaces the "Cat" and serves the purpose of making more noise !

Ok it actually serves the purpose of better exhaust flow.

Costs anywhere from $40-$200 for parts and installation depending on where you go.

Please keep in mind, a test pipe should only be used for "Off road Purposes" ! (lol)

i'm getting my dp custom made 2.5 inches for only 160 and a test pipe for just 60 dollars. pretty good deal compared to some places on the internet

It doesn't matter how many posts you do, it's how much you've read the other posts :D

I'm not certain where 'test pipe' comes from, it either comes from testing emissions without the effect of the catalyst; or testing without backpressure, but in this case, you'd also have to remove the muffler for it really to be called a test pipe. Either way, it's a TEST and TESTS arent meant to be permanent!

So if you put a test pipe permanently, is it really called a test pipe anymore? BTW, you're just killing the birds and snakes and other people with hydrocarbons when your engine goes off tune - and make sure you run rich than lean in my opinion. NO2 which is produced when running lean is twice as bad as unburned HC for the environment. Not only it aids in smog and being very irritating to inhale (NO THIS STUFF IS NOT N2O), it also causes acid rain. But we all wouldn't run it lean anyway...
