ok, so i just bought a 94 eclipse 1.8L 4g37 from an old lady whos owned it off the lot. It has 104,000 freeway miles because she has always driven the car to and from WA and NA now, she also never changed the oil, i came to the conclusion that the huge tick was from the 100,000 mile old oil, i changed the oil and the tick remains even if not louder now! can you guys help me out and try to figure out what this is? and if you know is this robbing my power? also, if there is damage can i do somthing to repair it?

Thanks alot

well, if she never changed the oil, you can already imagine that the motor is toast and that you will need to do a complete overhaul of the engine.

The Ticking is the valve rockers, the engine is likely in need of a rebuild, but you can pull the Valve Cover and check for a collapsed/clogged hydraulic lash adjuster. you clean them in diesel fuel. get a manual.

well, i had no clue that she had never changed the oil, untill after i bought it. see, sometimes the engine just stops ticking, and sounds perfect, but there are sometimes that it just ticks like no other and wont stop, its weird? i took it on a test drive and it didnt tick? so i assumes, running driving but a little body damage.....ok yea thats worth 600$$ plus i only payed 600 for it so i grabbed it up :) ive never rebuilt an engine befor, so how exactly do i go about that? and how long would it take?

thanks for the help

motor rebuilds are pretty involved for the "weekend mechanic"

you should go ahead and read ginsu's sticky on rebuilding the 1.8... see whether or not you have the time/tools/funds/mechanical inclination to put it all together.

Also depends on what kind of oil you used....She might've had some thick oil in there since her last oil change...If you switched over to synthetic, or something too light of a weight, then lifter tick will be loud

What kind/weight of oil are you using and does the 'ticking' sound go away after the car warms up?

Likely nothing to get all stressed about IMO. Give up a little more info about your problem and how the car is acting and we can probably help you out a little. :)

There are many 'enthusiasts' around here that will be glad to try and help out if they can...

Thats what I asked...

He said she NEVER changed the oil. I've had lifter tick but it goes away and I replaced the lifters during the rebuild on mine. If that car went 100,000 miles without an oil change, I'm pretty sure the motor is done for.

The way to stop the ticking is to replace the lifters, which is pretty easy on this engine. Just because it ticks, doesn't mean the engine oil was never replaced. Mine developed the lifter tick after about 60,000, and it was oil-changed religiously.

Do a search on lifters in this forum only and see what you find. If you don't find what your looking for, I, as well as several people on here, can tell you exactly how to do it with ease. You'll get out for around $60 if you do it yourself (gross estimate).

i know the manual is like 18 bucks, but a good investiment,. i knopw how to do it myself also and i think i know which one is ticking because i can kinda move it up and down with my fingers, and if i can replace it would it be ok to use an used one ?

i know that stuff has a real thick viscosity will that mess with my oil pressure or the oiling of my engine?and will it clog anything up?
Nope it won't mess with the oil pressure. When its mixed with regular oil its not that thick.

I don't think the problem is your oil. I think the lifters need to be replaced. Like I said, Mine got lifter tick after only 60,000 miles, and the oil was changed religiously. When I finally replaced the lifters, there was visible scarring on 3 out of 8 of them, where the lifter contacts the valve stems. After I replaced them, no more tick, end of story. Its not that hard of a job, and well worth the effort in my opinion, and there is more than one person on here that would be glad to tell you the exact steps, no need to buy a manual.

im sure the lady changed the oil like twice in the 100,000 miles or somthing, but when i changed it all of the oil came out like black oat meal or somthing, it was the blackest black i have ever seen and it had chunks, in it, plus it only has a tiny 97 HPright now, so i think the oil did damage yes? what is the stock hp of that engine? oh, and yea after a while it used to stop ticking when it warmed up, but now that i changed the oil it ticks even worse!! sucks. Im pretty sure i can pull off changing the lifters, im pretty mechanicly inclined i just have never built an engine befor and i have no clue where to start and i have no clue what it all includes, but ill read the other post on it. One last thing, what are the best spark plugs to use for more proformance? whats the best oil/WT? and would i be able to pass DEQ if i took off the cat?

thanks alot you guys

if she really never changed it like you claim, and you used synthetic or something light weight like chicago said, its gonna get louder.. as far as removing the cat, is DEQ emissions? im pretty sure a cat is required for most inspections.. get some flanges welded up, so you can bolt the cat on, and take it off at free will
