To make a long story short driving home on day i hear this bamm sound and the car begins to act weird. I push it home since i was about 100 feet from my house. Checked the timming belt and it was intact. When i took the top cover off i could see some other belt was suck inbetween the timming belt at the bottom. I was able to pull a broken piece out and it was about a foot long since it was not intact the other piece is at the bottom still. My question now is what belt was the one that got jammed in TB's way? And how in the world do u take of the bottom cover? I already took of all the other belts. this is for a 1g 1.8L a/t n/t. Thanks.

The belt that broke and ended up in the timing belt is the front balance shaft belt. The lower timing belt cover has five bolts - two on each side and one in the middle. You need to remove the harmonic balancer first, though.

which one is the harmonic balancer :dunno: or does some one have a picture?

This is the front balance shaft belt. You need to remove the harmonic balancer to remove the lower timing belt cover. It bolts onto the crankshaft sprocket (4-bolts) illustrated on the right picture..

ok i removed the bottom timming belt cover and now do i have to take off the backplate on the crankshaft sproket to intall the new front balance shaft belt? I was using a wrench to try to losen the big bolt in the middle of the crankshaft but all it does its rotate the entire sproket with it. Is there is way of holding the sproket so it wont move?

1.Yes.
2. Yes. You can make your own tool as seen in Taboo's post above or you can purchase this....--->

Or you can put a 1/2" drive breaker bar into the hole in the crank sprocket bolt and jam the bar against part of the frame and crank the car for like 1/2 second. That's how I did mine and it worked like a charm.

yeah most any car parts place like autozone or pepboys will have that tool. I would recommend going to sears and buying a craftsman though(lifetime warranty on hand tools). If you can afford it get a snap on or mac tool, in my humble opinion they are built tougher.:D Also i dont if you can but this is what i did i let my friend put a strap wrench over it pushing it from underneath while i cranked the crap out of if with a breaker bar from up top. Hope this helps man and good luck. late, kevin. The fun part is putting it all back together hehe.

well i got a hold of a breaker bar and managed to remove the bolt. I was amazed at how easy it was to remove it when using the right tools. Now Im trying to remember where all the bolts are supposed to go.
