Top SPEED?!?

Hi...

I'm wondering what is basically the true top end (flat out) speed that my car can be able to achieve once I get some new tires on it. I know the 2g FWD's had speed governors on them, but mine had been removed. While test driving my lil' demon, I had her up to 135..this was with the previous owner in the car. He said she will do 145 (speedo needle completely buried) but he never had the balls to go racing past cops at that speed. I was just wondering what 5th gear at 7200 or so will possess in a 2g FWD with 225/45/17 Tires. Once the summer comes I will post a day time video of this...one with shitty quality for you poor dial up souls, and a bigger mpeg for all your broadband wh0res. Thanks in advance.

TOP SPPEEEEDDDDD!!!!!!

Well I know the FWD has a little more advantage in top speed, but I also know that if the GS-T and GSX had the proper mods they would both Pegg theyre speedos.

Check out the first picture on top in the Misc Pics Category.

I took my car to 140mph with the stock turbo and it was still going. With the mods you have I think it should be easy to do 155mph if not more.

This is were your Front Mount is really gonna come in handy :).

did anyone see the friggin temp guage on the 98 that said he was doin 180, i saw the speedo and i'd say 180 is about right if he has never changed the guage faces otherwise it could be off, but 155 is easy on these cars

TOP SPEEED!!

Man, the Temprature is gotta be high. The engine is screaming!!!.

Shifting at 8.5rpm is one thing, but having the RPM sit there for a long time around 10-30sec is another thing.

this is why in japan they always install huge everything, triple thick radiator, triple thick intercooler, 16row oil coolers. Because over there they care about top speed more than 1/4mile and they always have huge setups and run major boost, so cooling is very important. One example is TOP SECRET, they have a supra with a skyline motor. One major mod it has is the HKS GT3037 twin turbo setup and since its a 5speed it tops out at 205mph at 10.5RPM!!!!!!! yeah 10.5GRAND!!!

http://www.3rotor.com/index.htm

Go to the 3rotor speed king section and its the video on the top left. at the end of the clip it will show you a freeze mode on the motec screen and then look at the RPM.

If his RPM guage on the eclipse is not off then he is in the 180mph region.

Just a lil FYI:

I was racing a Celica GTS the other day on a popular highway. He would do the normal ricer blow by's, etc. Well after I would pull like ten cars from 60-100 and LOL at him..I decided to cool off and give him a blow by. I know they are ricer-ish, but I had been meaning to test top speed of my car for some time now. Plus I had two friends in the car with me as witnesses. Needless to say I hit 152 and I *KNOW* the car could have went 160..but my z-rated firestones are bald and were vibrating pretty bad at that speed. Plus there were some cars I was approaching. Anyways...when I get some new tires/rims I will get a video shot outside of my car hopefully at 160 or so. I wish I would have looked at my RPM's at 152..but I know I had a fair bit to go.

You guys do realize there is quite a bit of inaccuracy in the speedo when you're in that speed range correct? Something like 10% if I'm not mistaken, and its usually for the negative unfortunately. Without a radar setup, its hard to REALLY know what you were doing, and the speed is therefore referred to as indicated speed.

Enuf for the lecture, I had my 90 FWD up to 135 at about 5k if I remember correctly but that was bone stock, and more recently I had my GSX up to 145 (max indicated on the speedo in my 90) across the Gandy (sic?) bridge in Tampa, FL. I was driving along with my Dad, who used to own the car, and some punks in a Honduh (sorry I'm H illiterate and don't mind staying that way) tried to race us, I punched it in 5th as we were at 55-60 and after a few moments the turbo spooled and we were rocketing off into the sweet moments of DSM goodness (you know, the ones where the car is actually running, you're not dirty/bloody/pissed off cause the car is broken, and the car seems willing to accept a little flogging). We passed the H turd in short order and took the speed up to max indicated and the car was begging for more. I wish I had looked at what the RPMs were but I was more interested in the other gauges like EGT and A/F at the time. I had made the turn around and was half way back across the bridge on the way to my parent's apartment before the Honduh went buzzing by. It was a good afternoon.

Top Speed

This morning on my way to Speedworld I was racing a Saturn SC and he topped out at 145mph. I went up to 150mph @5700rpms in 4th gear with no problem. I still have V-rated Goodyears so that is as fast as I'll go until I replace my tires. And the error rate of the speedo is ~5% at those speeds.

Don't know if any of ya'll have seen this page but it does a Speed calculation based on gearing and tire size. It already has the make and year of all the eclipses in it so you don't have to know any numbers. Just put in 1g or 2g and AWD or FWD then select the gear and rpm you would like to know the speed at and it will tell you.

Check it out: Speed Calculator

Disclaimer - I don't take responsibility if it's wrong, I didn't write the code. Subjet to terms of service, you're milage may vary :D

I put in a 2G FWD with 215/55 on 16's and it came up with roughly ;) 183.517050714685 mph in 5th gear at 7500rpm (stock revlimiter). I'm not 100% sure of stock tire sizes on 2g's so that may be off a little.

I'm running 235/45's on 17's on my 1G AWD and I get roughly 190.506793588854 mph in 5th gear at 8300 (my new rev limiter due to Todd's Mods). The fastest I've been is 7400 rpms in 5th which nets 169.849430428616mph. Which was also verified by the driver of the M5 that I was following, his speedo showed 170mph

Hope this helps everyone out some.

Can you beat the M5, I mean what sort

an you?
I was pulling on the M5 in 3rd and 4th gear but I didn't want to pass him. I knew the guy and I knew he wasn't racing me he was just seeing if the M5 had a speed limiter. So I figured I'd just top it out with him leading so maybe I wouldn't have been the one to get the ticket. Once I got into 5th though my timing started falling and I couldn't pull on him anymore, it was about dead even.

Oh yeah, the M5 ran a 13.2 @ 104 that day I believe with a 2.0 60ft. That was with him really granny shifting and short shifting. So he might have got 12's if he had gone all out but that's not why he has that car. His DSM is for racing the M5 is just his cruising car.

WTF was in that Saturn?!?! I have a crappy SC2 as a beater driver and it took forever to get it up to 115. Maybe it could do 120mph downhill.

Laser AWD

Dont forget that you have to factor in drag. There is always going to be drag do to aerodynamics. Your car might be able to hypothetically hit 180 or so, but in the real world with wind, and taking into account drag it might not get there.

Me and NOSLASER had a long discussion about that. and if he sees this post I am sure he will come in and argue his point.

I realize there is drag involved but I believe that if you have enough horsepower and can actually pull to 8300rpms in 5th gear then the calculator should be correct.

Maybe a windy day will have some play with it but it was dead on @ 170mph so I don't see why if I had enough horsepower to actually pull 8300rpms in 3rd that it wouldn't get there. I just feel that if you know all gear ratio's and tire size that drag wouldn't come into play unless you didn't have enough horsepower to overcome it. However if you have enough horsepower the sky's the limit.

Let me know if I'm wrong.

yeah your right horsepower is what it takes. I just wanted to make that point that there are other limiting factors.

Cool. BTW, nice time in your signature. I haven't seen too many other times in the 11's with a DSM with less than 115mph. You must shift quicker than I do  or you had a better 60ft to get those couple of extra .1's ;)

1g tranny will not give you 180MPH

I was Extreme Motorsports the other day getting some work done to my car and I asked Sean (Glazer) what RPM his car was at when he did his 9.01@157MPH pass. He told me 8500 RPM! He shifts a 9000RPM and he said that the short gearing of the stock 94 Tranny he uses is keeping him from getting a little more top end out of his car. He said if somebody made gear sets for the Talon he could have made the 8s. He sounded really frustrated cause he just purchased a Subaru WRX and he said they offer total gear sets for those cars and wished someone made them for the DSMs.He felt that the most he could get out of the stock DSM tranny was 165 tops. Thats from the horses mouth so I think he would know. But I bet he is getting ready to Modify that WRX, but when I asked him he just smiled.
