Tranny Threads -- Hard to screw in filler plug

I just picked up a galant VR-4 over the weekend. When I went to change the tranny fluid, I had to crank it about every turn to get the filler bolt out. I notice that the thread on the bolt were scored so I put a new/used bolt in today. It went a few turns easily (like it should) but then was tough to turn the rest of the way in. I have new filler plug on order. Is there something that I can do to clean up the threads on the tranny?

You could clean the threads with the appropriate tap and then flush the fluid to remove and metal shavings.
