I haven't actually got my DSM yet, but i anticipate doing a transmission rebuild to beef up the gears and syncros to take the abuse of a Big 16g turbo and all of the BPU's. How can I prep this car transmission wise so i will have a reliable daily driver. I have been to TRE's page and I heard something about Conicelli, but unsure of the next step. Is the transmission rebuild pretty straightforward e.t.c.? Any help will be much appreciated...

I just got done rebuilding the transmission on my '97 GS-T Eclipse. It wasn't too bad at all. I downloaded the manual off the internet. I got the parts fairly cheap I thought. I also got some of the parts for 2nd gear from TRE. Jon was excellent help on the phone. I only did my 1st and 2nd gear shaft. I think I spent less than $300. I wasn't getting any grind in 3, 4, 5th gears so I didn't mess with them. I was on a budget. I got it together on Saturday. It shifts like butter. I couldn't be any more happy or proud of myself. Let me know if you have further questions.

Cool...Couple more questions

What parts did you get for the rebuild other than the shift fork e.t.c.? What tools do i need in order to get rebuild done properly and any tips on getting the tranny out e.t.c.?
Where on the internet can iget some tips on the rebuild? Thanks for the help so far...

Go here and get the 150 page manual.

http://www.ecanfix.com/~manualcd/index2.htm

Scroll to the bottom where it says Patrick 2g mt overhaul. Download the .pdf file. You'll need the Adobe reader to view it. If you don't have it, download it. The manual is 6meg.

For parts, I got them at http://www.teamrip.com and

http://www.mitsubishi-accessories.com under the OEM parts section. They were much cheaper than a dealer would sell them for. Free shipping too.

I changed:

1st and 2nd shift fork $25
2nd gear $100
1st gear synchro $18
2nd gear synchro assembly $70
1st/2nd hub and slider $95
2 synchro springs $7
3 synchro keys $7
1 end bearing $25

The prices are pretty close. If you want to estimate what the project will cost, go to that 2nd website link. They have all the pictures that you can view as well as the prices of each part.

As for tools, you definately need a puller to get the end bearings off. You won't get them off any other way. So say you need a press to get them back on, but we didn't. We just used a billet and a rubber hammer. Other tools,

Metric socket set
Torque wrench that goes up to 110 ft. lbs.
Hammer and a punch to get the little pins out.
Screwdriver to get bearing race(s) out.
Grease/ motor oil to lubricate during reassembly.
Parts washer/ cleaner
Clean work area
Permatex Ultra Gray sealer for reassembly. Do not use anything but this kind.
2.5 quarts of GM Syncrhomesh tranny oil
Plastic bags labeled to put individual parts in(DO THIS! It will make reassembly faster and more organized) After it's down for 2 or 3 weeks you'll forget what goes where.

When you take apart, there will be shims below the bearing races. Do not make the mistake i didn't and get them mixed up. Keep them with the proper shaft. I took me awhile to figure out which on went where. I had to do a squish test with solder.

I'd say that, if anyone takes their time with it, they could do this project. I'd do it again. It was my first time and I didn't think it was that bad. Now is a good time to change that clutch too.

Ok, that first link got messed up when I cut and pasted it.

Click on it, then go to free samples on the left, after that take the first link that shows up from the window that pops up. Then choose dsm(the last choice on the list). Finally, go down to the bottom and click on the Patrick one.

That will get you the free manual.

No doubt about it. TRE is high priced but they work with you over the phone. When you never rebuilt a tranny, you value that support. How many dealerships or tranny shops can you go to and ask them how to work on your own tranny and then turn around and buy very little from them in return? If feel really confident after rebuilding mine. Heck, I'd rebuild one for someone else.
