Turbo spoolup question

When I leave from a start my car seems to run fine and you can feel the turbo spool up somewhat. BUT, if I am cruising along and downshift, the car feels like a dog and seems like the turbo doesn't spoolup. I thought maybe it's just because my car is fairly stock, but I thought I'd ask and see what someone else thought.

I don't know what 'feeling like a dog' is, but when I down shift, it takes less than a second to start building boost again. Even stock, it should only take a few seconds to get up to top boost. Is that helpfull?

Hey man they call me the Mad Scientist. Maybe that's because I know everything about everything. Guess there's room enough for two. Anyway, RedlinedTSi, could you explain what exactly your car does when you hit the gas? Does it hesistate or jump? Check spark plugs/ wires. Sh*t factory wires which need to be replace as early as 60k!!!!!!!!!!

LOL My friend, welcome to the wacky world of DSM Phantom Knock!

You may be saying, what the hell is Phantom Knock... well, good question.

However, the way to know for sure is to hook up a datalogger to your car and watch the knock counts... I can almost gurantee you that you will see a huge spike in knock when you down shift... it happens on a lot of cars? It happens on mine

Solution???? I don't know??? Maybe one of the guys on here that is on the PK list can help?

I used to have PK *knock on wood*, and it was getting me down. After changing a few things, it went into remission...I don't know exactly what made it go away, I kind of changed a few things at once. Redlined TSi, a little more info is needed to see if it sounds like PK.

Well, I don't know what else to add. I mean when I downshift and floor it the cars gains speed, no jumping or anything, but it just feels like the turbo never kicks in. The knock problem could very well be causing it. At least to me it seems logical. I changed plugs & wires about 5000 miles ago so I'm hoping that's not the problem. I know I have BAD lifter ticking when it's cold, but I never run my car hard until it warms up. I guess I could hook up one of those knock LEDs to see if the car is pulling timing. I really don't know what else to do to try and fix it. I wouldn't think my car is running lean since it's pretty much stock. Could replacing the knock sensor fix it? Thanks.

Yes and no... I replaced my KS and got MORE knock than on my old KS and my car is a 90!!!

I would honestly save the money for the KS and put it to use by buying a data loger... you really make it hard for yourself and anyone else on this board to help you without being able to tell us what you data logger says... it is kinda of like a shot in the dark...

I am willing to bet that when you downshift, your get massive knock and timing gets pulled like a mofo... and that is why it feels so slow...

Data log it and see!
