What's YOUR timing belt interval??

To me it seems that the timing belt(s) are "life-ometers" for our engines. They have to be set just right, have to be quality, and must be in good condition just to meet the factory's recommended 60k replacement interval.

Personally, after having done my belt this weekend, I probably won't leave it on for more than 50k miles. Maybe even change it as soon as 30k! I mean, with such a critical maintenance item where a wearout or premature loosening means engine failure in turn costing booku cash to fix, I bet most of you DSMers don't go the full 60k. Am I right?:dunno:

OEM every 70,000 or 7 years I believe it is, whichever comes first.

I do mine every 2 years. That is about 3,500-4,000 miles :D

...Not to thread jack..but what timing belt are you guys running? I've been throwing on the OEM, but I notice some of you rocking the bling (i.e. kevlar, greddy). Are those belt that much worth it for a DD?
No. I tried one of the Power Enterprises, kevlar timing belts for a year; about 15,000 miles when the Talon was my DD. I felt like I wasted my money, so I switched back. I recommed you just stick with the Mitsu OEM. It will be fine for your DD.

Every 50K for me, so in a few weeks it will be two TB jobs on the laser since I have owned it for five years.Buy I used to DD it till I got the Jeep, and although it might be overkill I replace everything,belts/idlers/pulleys/tens (duh..),WP,cam seals etc...
It might be overkill but I have never had a 4G fail on me in 13 years and none of my cars ever leaked or had stupid breakdowns that were lack of maintenance related.

It was done at about 95k, and I just did it last DEC 07 in which the car was at 130k. The car didn't get driven from Jan - Jul of this year, so I'll probably do it next summer again right before I deploy, again. Why not right? The timing belt/belts/water pump maintenance package isn't too pricey, and changing em out gives one some piece of mind when going WOT everyday on a DD.

What IS the advantage of the "super" belts? To withstand interference from loose debris or absorb the impact from a b. belt snapping? If it's just to last longer, would the other timing components last with it?

I agree that renewing your timing components is worth the peace of mind. To me, that's worth changing them early. It's fairly cheap and the labor isn't horrible.

50k is becoming the average interval here. That would be my max.:)

I think that greddy did go under. That happened awhile ago too. I have heard that the reason that you get the kevlar timing belts is cause they don't break. I haven't heard of any kevlar belts breaking under normal circumstances like oem belts would. I will still always use a kevlar belt as long as I own a dsm. The peace of mind is worth the extra money.

How often is changeout recommended for the WP? Is it with every other belt changeout?

What's odd (for me, that is..)is that the 4G63 is the only motor that I know of that WP's are in the belt changing cycle. I've never done any WP on other motors that I've done.

On the link above: I've never heard of "Continental" belt parts - any buzz or history of reliability with this brand?

Chavez408: Continental timing belt kit ... Why don't you go with ebay kit since you want to go cheap ? Don't forget that you get what you pay for ...

op712: Yes on every belt changeout it's a good idea to change the WP.
