Why do I keep killing power steering pumps?

I would like to ask for suggestions on why I keep killing power steering pumps in my 2g AWD.

In the last two years I have went through 2 power steering pumps, neither pump was new, but as soon as it got cold out they started making noise and would intermittently work until they would get progressively worse and then stop working totally. The bearings never seized or even offered any resistance over when they worked.

Im not sure if I just had bad luck on two pumps that were on their way out, or what.

I know that there are two major ways to kill engine accessories, heat and an overly tightened belt.

I have 0 exhaust leaks, all my heat sheilds are in place, coolant temps are always 179 per dsmlink. The OEM power steering cooler is still in place. The belts were new and fine, as it wasent the bearings that went bad.

I'm not aware of any power steering leaks :dunno: I try to check the levels as much as possible, and used prestone with stop leak (only prestone local auto store carries) and walmarts supertech brand power steering fluid. They may be too thick Because the cold is killing them, but IDK I thought any power steering fluid would work in our cars.

At $15-$25 per used pump its not really a big deal, more of an inconvenience than anything but what can I do to help this?

In the past what killed your power steering pumps?

Oh I guess thats why I drained ATF out of there when I got the car.

VFAQ:
The power steering on DSMs use Dexron fluid. This fluid should be changed regularly to enhance longevity of the system. There are synthetic transmission fluid available and they are recommended. An easy method of keeping the system fresh is to replace the fluid in the reservoir every oil change and the fluid will stay in good shape. Just suck out the fluid in the reservoir and replace. No bleeding or air contamination will occur and it is a 5 minute job.

Feel free to move this thread to the Noob section.

Killed another one...

Drove all summer on the last pump but now at the end of a 15 minute drive the fluid boils out and over the top of the reservoir. For this last pump I flushed out the system by cycling about a gallon of Dexron fluid through it while turning the wheel to clean out what was left of the old p/s fluid.

This last pump (pump #3) has only had dextron ATF and still on the first chilly night it began to die. It's almost totally dead now.

What should I do different with this next (#4) pump?

I would hate to remove the powersteering because this is my D.D. but this is getting old.

Not sure about 2g pumps but the 1G ones have that little wire that goes in the back. Maybe yours is not on there messing it up.
