Wierd Steering Prob (not what you think)

I've looked through about 12 pages of threads and haven't found much. Lately, the steering has been a little waunkee. When i'm accelerating in a turn, and press the clutch, the steering wheel seems to become loose for a sec, but then returns. Even traveling at highway speeds on a loopy on/off ramp, it does the same thing. Not really a big deal hoestly, but in the last couple weeks, driving down town, as I'm approching a red light, the car will really want to pull to one side. Which side, varies on the angle of the road. This will usually only happen during deceleration. Driving in a straight line or turning slowing, everything is just fine

Checked the obvious: lugs are tight, picked up the car and the front wheels aren't loose, ball joints are greased regularly, checked brakes (both calipers are fine, pads + rotors have 3000 miles on them) the fluids are full, and I even put in some NAPA PS fluid cleaner/leak fixer > 500 miles ago, and the car had a 4-wheel alignment about 5K ago when I got the new wheels.

Does it sound like it's time for a new Power Steering pump or maybe new rack + pinion? Anything else I should check? I should add, the car doesn't make any noise when this happens either.

A little "wonky" eh? :p
To me, pulling to one side either indicates something is wrong with your tires and/or your suspension. When I had really sh*t tires on the car (i.e. worn) they would follow grooves in the road like nobody's business and it'd be a bitch to control. Later (different car) I had a nasty pull to the right that wasn't fixed by an alignment. Turned out the lower control arm was bent and had to be ($300 later!) replaced. Just some thoughts for you...

You can also look at the steering ball joint thats just behind the rotor. Take one off. Takes about 10 minutes... If you can move them around with your hand very easily they are shot. I just replaced mine because my steering was messed up. 65 bucks for both sides. Just have to whack at them pretty good to get them off.

I was going to post on a similar problem to this, but I didn't think anyone would no what the hell I was talking about.

My steering will feel loose. The problem is most noticeable on the highway. When I go into a turn the steering feels as if the car is sliding and then suddely catches the road, the car is not sliding but it feels like it until it "catches". I believe it is something in my steering colum because, for example if I have the car turing full left and straigten out and go into another left turn I don't feel it, but if I go into a right turn it does it, and vice versa.

Unlike the other guy I dont have to press the clutch to feel the problem.

Any ideas?

I know the exact moment that it happened, and that is how I know it is not a problem with maintenence with the fluid or anything like that.

I was getting on the highway and the person in front of me was accelerating very slow, and I am impatient with those kind of things, so I cut across the solid lines to get onto the freeway and hit something in the process. That is when the problem started. I really wish I had not done that now.

Everyone here knows that 1 gens have rpm sensitive steering, not speed sensitive steering right? This means that in the turns (at certain rpm's), the wheel starts to alternate between assist/no assist repeatedly and give you the sensation that you are going to oversteer, then understeer. That is most likely the surging type sensation being felt.

Regarding tracking on the road, check your tires. Many times, a tire rotation side to side will immediately show the culprit. If the tires are nearly worn out, you most need to start with fresh rubber before trying to diagnose a steering concern as you are describing.

thanks for the input Ed, but what I am feeling is not any type of steering adjustment, just something screwed up. My tires were pretty worn so I put my stocker wheels back on. The tires on them have plenty of tread, so it is not the tires. I just wish it wasn't but ass cold outside so I could put the car up to see what is going on.

Got it

Can't believe I didn't notice this before. The outer tierod end on the passenger side was bent and very loose (I only checked the drivers side). Replaced both of them, rotated the tires, and got a 4-wheel alignment. Everything's good now.
