Zerex Water Pump Lubricant....WOW

Ok, my car has been leaking coolant from the water pump for a while now. Sometimes its just a small amount, other times it's enough to start making a trail under my car, down the carport.

So I went to the store to price a waterpump, but went through the "additive" aisle first like always. I decided to try this small bottle of Zerex Water Pump Lubricant and Protector.

I used to have to add coolant/water everyday, but since adding a bottle of this my coolant has not leaked. It's stayed at a normal level and hasn't dropped hardly any at all. I can't say enough good about this. The $2 bottle may saved me from a $400 dealer visit.

So yea, if you have a leaky water pump you may want to try a bottle of this stuff and see what happens. I can't recommend it enough.

The reason it works is because most water pumps start leaking due to this;

Silicants in the coolant build up over time on the coolant pump seals where they contact the pump shaft . This is ok until the build-up gets heavy enough to flake off. When this happens there is a gap between the seal and shaft where it flaked off, allowing coolant to leak. Most additives contain substances that will help remove/break down the silicant build-up so the seals can make full contact with the shaft again. No gap = no leak.

from a scientific point of view it does
but you have to not put a whole lot in; maybe 1/3 the bottle.

i did a chemistry project that involved using this stuff, and it does help. basically, it is very good at heat transfer, meaning your coolant will be more reactive and suck up more heat in a shorter time. the bad thing is that it does tend to heighten the freeze point / lower the boiling point, as well as leave a slimy discharge. the only time ive ever heard of these two situations is when the person uses an entire bottle. dont...

oh, it smells like rotting fish unfortunately.

This information I could have USED FRIGGIN 6 MONTHS AGO!!! WHEN I HAD TO TAKE MY CAR TO SATAN TO GET A LEAKING WATER PUMP CHANGED....:D
Anywho, nice man, I'll need to pick it up, just add it in the coolant, just for the hell of it.

i just bought a bottle of this, put half in my car, and half in my dad's... i'll let you know if i notice anything...

i don't have any problems, but i figure bringing temps down is always good...

my dad's car (93 suzuki sidekick) sometimes gets too hot in traffic and stuff... so this should definately help him...

Uhhhh

Well, I just read a thread with a lot of posts in regards to which coolant is better--green or orange. I'm a little confused. I used a mixture of 30 percent Dex cool, 70 percent water, and 1 bottle of water wetter in my last talon that I had. I ran it for around 10 months and never had a problem. I just put the same fluid ratio in the talon I have now. People are saying that Dex cool is bad--it doesn't coat like the green does! Please Help and let me know if anyone runs Dex cool. Thanks.

So you just add it to your coolant system and leave it in there flowing through your car until you change the coolant again?

Ok, the reason the water pump leaks out the weep hole is to let you know its dieying!!

You need to change it. Its not working well anymore. The hole is there for a reason.

Yes its sucks that our water pumps are behind our balance shaft belts, which are behind our timing belts which are behind our drive belts which are behind our engine mounts etc(friggin design) but if its done, its done.

As for coolant, I work at a GM dealer, turning wrenches. And I can't reccomend DexCool. Aweful stuff, acidic and turns into "peanut butter" over time.

Good green coolant all the way.

And in the summer, clean water and Water Wetter for at the track.

I had a water pump leak a little bit when I overtightened the belt once. I guess the belt pulled on the pump just enough to let some coolant weep out once the cooling system became pressurized at running temp. It was a new pump with a new gasket, the leak stopped after the belt tension was reduced.

just something to look for

Thanks for the tip. I may have overtightened the belt a couple months ago. Now, however, the belt squeals when it is cold out. I don't know if that is happening because it is too tight or because it is not tight enough. In the past my belt only squealed when it was loose. Can the belt squeal if it is too tight?:confused: At any rate, I think I'll have to replace the water pump, timing belt, accessory belts, pullies, etc. :( The DSM nightmare never ends, but I just can't bring myself to let the car go.

Your belts won't squeel when they are too tight, but they will make a whining noise similar to a supercharger.

I agree, when your water pump starts leaking, replace it! It takes maybe an hour to tear down the side of your engine to get to it, if it starts to leak, no better time to learn how to replace it and re-time the car. It's not behind the balance belt, by the way. Not that you should have a balance belt anymore ;)

Stock TSI -Why not use Honda anti freeze? They were the ones who pioneered the research and use in production cars.


I work for honda and i use their 2 yr blue antifreeze in my eclipse. Works wonders and it seems the temps are a little lower then the normal green antifreeze but that might just be cause its new fluid and the right mixture.

no I suppose you wouldn't HAVE to change the bshaft belt to do the water pump, but for the cost of it, you might as well, especially since its been leaked on. Apparently the tensioner pulleys don't like to be wet either. Something in the factory manual about not washing them.

Can someone tell me what and where is the water pump weep hole? I have a coolant leak and I need to solve it asap. Coolant leak mostly weep through the bottom *or the lowest point of the water pump? or how? I am the pretty sure, after searching and looking around, my leak is not throug the shaft out of the water pump... but somewhere else. I can't see too well with all the pulley on top of it.

My coolant leak's coolant has covered up the oil filter housing and it shows dripping even after engine stopped running and cold (very cold engine shows dripping of about 1 drip / 15 to 25 seconds).

This has gotten worse over last 2 to 3 months. I can even see a puddle after 10 minutes after a shutting a hot engine off and let cool down under oil filter housing area.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.
