We all know dealing with rust can be a MAJOR headache. Pain in the arse to get rid and no one wants it to get any worse.
When wonder around a store today I ran across this stuff called Evapo-Rust (http://www.evaporust.ca/). $9.99 got me a 1L of it so I decided to try it on my shifter assembly and Symborski kit which has some mild to serious surface rust (my shifter plate is the worse).

I filled a plastic storage bin with the 1L of it and dropped in two of the Symborski bushings. Here they are after about 30 minutes of soaking.

Here's the rest of the Symborski kit and some bolts. You can see what I was working with.

I then broke down the rest of the shifter and put it all into the solution except for the base plate.

I have to say I'm pretty damn impressed with this stuff. It's mild enough that you don't need to wear a face mask or anything. Plus they claim it can get over 300lbs of rust removed. When it goes black it's no longer good and since it's mild it can be dumped down the sink according to the website (I would dispose of it properly though).
It can be bought at Harbor Freight in the states and Canadian Tire in Canada.

Hope someone gets some use out of this.

I have used that stuff before and it is awesome!!!

I used it as well as other similar products, Metal Rescue and the likes, on a 16G cartridge and a bunch of other parts. It works wonders, just use a rust protector on the parts if you don't paint them right away because they tend to rust very quickly. This wasn't finished yet but you get the idea. It cleans where you would never get with a wire brush. You can buy it concentrated and diluted based on the amount of rust to be removed.

Good find.

Yep, it was rusted all over. Those pictures still show some rust, as I mentioned earlier, after you remove the parts from the bath they tend to flash-rust as you can see in the pics. Evapo-Rust as well as Metal Rescue sell an inhibitor that you spray on the cleaned metal and stops rust form coming back for a while. I would not buy less than a gallon though, if parts are really rusted it goes quickly.

If you can get a gallon, I'd buy buy it. All I can find locally is 1L so I'm stuck using that.
I've got a lot of bolts and brackets in my engine back that will get bathed in this stuff and then painted.

Here's all my shifter parts out, they look brand new.

In the Evapo-Rust.

I used a paper towel to get some Evapo-Rust on the places that weren't submerged. I then put some plastic wrap on top and put a lid on the tub. I'll check it tomorrow.

First of all I am not affiliated with the company I am going to mention in any way. Cleared that out, I have been searching for alternatives to Evapo-Rust because compared to Metal Rescue I believed it was less effective. Unfortunately Metal Rescue only ships the pre-mixed liquid which is unfortunate because 4/5 of it is water that only adds to the shipping cost. So I found the Rust Depot that ships concentrate and can be contacted for International shipping (sorry i did not notice before you're located in Canada). I thought it may help.

So far I'm pleased with the Evapo-Rust. We'll see how it works on some heavier rusted items.

Someone please do this to the brake reservoir bracket!
Exactly what I was thinking, that could sell me on the product.
Never time I get out to the car, the brake reservoir is one of the items I'll be using this on.

Wow this is a great thread Anthony! For the price I might go to Crappy and pick up a bottle as well. It looks great for rusty hardware and the like.

Well, I did mean to update this for you guys but just forgot.

Here's pictures of the shifter plate after sitting in the Evapo-Rust.

I also tried the stuff with something super rusty. There's a bracket that holds my DRL relay and some other relay. Well, it was pretty rusty after living in the front wheel well of my car for over 10 years. I don't have a before picture but trust me when I say this thing was COVERED in rust, not one unrusted spot on it. Here's what it looking like now.

I think a bit of wire brush action followed by some more soaking and it would be as good as new.
