Ok, this story is fairly long and engrossed, but let's begin.
I was crusing down Deer Park Avenue in Long Island looking for some trouble. I saw a red 95-99 Eclipse GS-T stop at a light to make a U-turn into a parking lot. I followed him into the parking lot and pulled up beside him and asked him and his buddy if they wanted to run. The driver looked at my car and said "Which car do you want me to run?" I said, "This one." Him and his friend started laughing and he said, "Are you joking?" I said, "Bring your car out on the street and see if I'm joking.." It was on..
We started from a roll in 1st gear at about 10mph, when I hit it, it was too late for him. I immediately got a car length from him and kept the length through second. We had to stop at a light but I knew he had missed a gear so I was willing to do a rerun. When the light changed green, we started again from a roll. This time I told him when I beep my horn 3 times, to go. After the 3rd beep, we hit it again, this time staying dead even. Through second gear, we were still dead even, then into 3rd gear we were even and had to stop because of traffic. The driver immediately asked me "You got turbo in that thing??" I laughed and nodded my head in acceptance.
We did a U-turn and stopped and a McDonald's. He was astonished to say the least. The fact of the matter was that I knew his car wasn't stock because I could hear his blow-off valve when he let off the gas. My question to one of you DSM owners is do all of the newer turbo models have a BOV that vents to the atmosphere? The reason I am asking is because when he popped the hood I could tell his BOV was stock and not capped at the inlet hose to allow venting to the air. I DID notice that his turbo was bigger than the stock turbo (which is distinctly small) and his compressor housing was shiny silver with his exhaust heat shield removed (now why would he do that when his car is stock). What pissed me off a little about the guy is that he said his car was pure stock except his K&N filter cone. I didn't see any boost controller. When I inspected his exhaust, I asked his friend if he had aftermarket exhaust. His friend confirmed with a "yes", but when the driver came around, he goes "No, that's a stock exhaust system." I couldn't tell because I know those cars have 2 tips on the muffler stock.
Anyway, going home, we went for it again on a long stretch and this is when my car started to edge him out. As I went into 4th gear, I started creeping him and we both had to get out of it. I'm sure that on top side, I would've left him.
One last thing, my car would've demolished a stock Eclipse GS-T, so I know he had more than a cone filter. The mistake the guy made is that the Probe GT and older 1st gen Talons and Eclipses were in direct competition with each other stock! He couldn't believe that my car stock only pulled 145hp, but I told him that the torque was 190lbs/ft stock. He also didn't know that the Talon during that year could beat the Probe off the line but not from a rolling start.. Hehehehe
